  1. For Amazon Prime users:

I have put a link to Larry G's page in the bottom footer. The link itself is kind of faint against the background, but I'm sure'll you'll find it.

  2. Thank you for that link. Is it okay to ask here if anyone knows of a blog that keeps track of what TV Series are expiring from Hulu Plus? Hulu does a poor job of notifying customers of this.

    1. Yes, it's okay. Sorry, I don't know of one, but I haven't really looked. Anybody else know?

    2. I dont know of one either. I have thought about starting a blog for hulu plus. :)

  3. I just noticed two movies in the new release section of my Netflix screen that I know were in my DVD queue but did not have a 'play' button next to them. I hope this was just a fluke. It sucks not knowing movies that are already in my queue are now available on streaming.

    1. I don't think it's a fluke. I periodically try to check my titles to see which are streaming only so I can try to give them priority. (I have a rather larger queue and am now taking classes to switch careers, cutting into my streaming time, so being able to prioritize is even more important now.) Anyway, I noticed that "Mothers and Daughters" is streaming but does not have the play button. I also noticed that some titles on my instant queue don't show up under "Watch Instantly" when I search on the DVD side. Netflix most definitely seems to be moving toward splitting the two services.

    2. This is really going to suck. I just randomly checked a few titles in the New Release section of the streaming side and there's a bunch of titles there that don't have a corresponding 'Watch Instantly' button on the DVD side. I don't know how to find out when my DVD titles become available for streaming now. :(

    3. I've noticed the same thing lately. The most recent example being From Afar which came out on DVD and streaming this week but my DVD queue which the movie was on made no reference to streaming nor had the play button show up next to it. Thankfully the movie wasn't shipped to me on DVD (another couple were) so I didn't waste a slot. I deleted it from my DVD queue and added it to my streaming queue.

Other recent movies from my DVD queue that are available to stream (but with no play button showing up next to them) include Mothers & Daughters, Bang Gang, 11 Minutes, Septembers of Shiraz, Sweet Bean, High-Rise, My Golden Days and Rams.

I love Netflix but am not impressed that the DVD and streaming sides are not working together anymore.

    4. The ones I found were Sweeny Todd (2007), The Wicker Man (2006) and Milk Money (1994).

    5. Maybe the powers that be at Netflix read this blog because now all those movies that were in my DVD queue and are available to stream now have a play button under them when I scan through the new releases and coming soon sections. Unlike a couple of days ago. I'm also seeing streaming dates in advance for a couple in my DVD list such as The Measure of a Man.

    6. Finally, some good news!

    7. Well, apparently they're doing it again. I just found The Imitation Game as a new release on streaming, but the DVD doesn't show that. I miss checking my DVD queue and finding new 'play' buttons. :>(

  4. I guess it is a new habit with Notflix where shows expire without notice but it still shows up but you can't play anything. Really pathetic how bad this service got from when I first had it in 2010.

    1. Not to mention their recent habit of getting licenses for films that have foreign language dialogue *without* also getting the license for the subtitles. I swear I must have run into at least 6 or 7 of those in the past year!

  5. make yourself heard: customers of both services should call both phone numbers and demand the two sides talk to each other (i.e., share and display data). as noted, they are operating as two separate services.

  6. my list is coming up as an unhelpful group of pictures again instead of a list of movies that I can order. Last time it seemed to only be like that a couple hours. I am using web, chrome.

    1. I also use Google Chrome as my browser and My List shows up fine.

I did have a moment of confusion on the first of the month when, after I'd emptied My List and was refilling it with interesting titles (as not everything new shows up in New Releases I find this works best for me each month), My List showed a bunch of movies that I'd not added to it. I refreshed the page and those random movies vanished and were replaced by those I'd actually added to it. Not sure what happened there.

  7. Bang Gang (2015) seems to have disappeared from Netflix. Not enough sex?

    1. I suspect one of three things:

      1. Film got taken out due to issues with subtitles or garbled video/audio. Best scenario because once those issues are fixed then the film will stream again.

      2. Film wasn't meant to be streaming when it was. Possible that Netflix does have a contract for the film, but it wasn't supposed to stream until a future date. Keep fingers crossed and hope that date comes fairly soon.

      3. There were numerous complaints from parents/subscribers on the film's subject matter (it's about teens having sex) or title. In that case, don't hold your breath.

      Delete
    2. Brian,

I watched the movie a week ago when it first arrived on streaming and there were no video/audio issues whatsoever.

I've noticed the occasional movie show up and then suddenly vanish from streaming within days so you might be right with your second suggestion.

Where were all these complaints? There are far more graphic movies (such as Gaspar Noe's Love which is still on there and has been for months and actually includes money shots and the Korean movie The Treacherous which has women being forced into a double headed dildo scene) on there and, despite the title and plot, Bang Gang is actually not that graphic.

      Delete
    3. Luke, thanks for helping me eliminate the first option.

I suspected it was more likely that it would be the first two options than the last. I think it was August when an Indian film called Laal Rang left Netflix after about a week. And before that, Fittest on Earth left in June after a few days (it ultimately showed up July 1). Don't know why this has been happening more often of late, but I wish they'd stop. Once it starts to stream, don't stop until it is supposed to expire.

I kind of suspected that it wouldn't be option 3, but I threw it out there because I could see some people balking at the plot and title. Not privy as to the numbers of an actual protest, but I could see it happening via phone call and e-mail. I think you're right about it not being as bad as Nymphomaniac and Love as it sounds like it gets into the emotional complications of such a thing as well.

    4. I can see, based on the title and plot description, people might expect Bang Gang to be a certain kind of movie but, if anything, it's a warning against unprotected teen sex as all the teen characters end the movie with an STD and one girl has an unwanted pregnancy that she deals with via abortion.

It's actually a good movie for teenagers to watch.

I have to assume your second suggestion is the correct one which is frustrating as I usually like to watch those movies that have been streaming for a while first as I naturally assume they'll expire first but now I'm going to have to focus mostly on those I really want to watch no matter when they show up just in case they suddenly vanish one day.

    5. I recently called NF Customer Service, and while I wasn't aware of so many now-you-see-it, now-you-don't titles, I did complain about numerous quality control issues, including movies and shows that leave without any notice on the website, e.g., Everybody Loves Raymond. If they're streaming films that aren't meant to be streaming, or at least not yet, that is also a quality control issue. Who's at the wheel, there? (I also put in yet another request for more notice of expiring movies.)

As far as customer complaints about Bang Gang, I can see parents calling about the title, especially because it is about teens. (Although I don't care about such things, I can guarantee you MY mom would have called, or maybe just cancelled the subscription.) Can't help thinking about Scrotal Recall, and what happened there.

    6. Carol, seeing as Netflix suddenly added the play buttons under those titles in the DVD coming soon and new release sections that are also available to stream after we complained about it on here, hopefully they will get their act together when it comes to the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't titles.

Very frustrating when you see a good movie (especially one you've been looking forward to for a long time and is not available on DVD) show up on streaming and you tell yourself you'll watch it that coming weekend only to find it gone when you look for it on Saturday.

By the way, thank you so much for this blog.

    1. Thanks Tim. I wonder what the heck is going on? Is it just poor quality control - going too fast without double-checking things? Putting titles on that shouldn't be streaming, then having to remove them, like Brian suggested, above? Do you know when Shaolin was added to NF, Tim? I didn't see it on instantwatcher, going back to middle of August. Or are they testing to see if they can delete things without our noticing? That wouldn't bode well. Anyway, thanks for letting us all know. If anyone is inclined to call NF Cust. Serv., it couldn't hurt to let them know we DO notice.

    2. It looks like it is still available but not showing up in search on Netflix instant website. I have DVD plan and I can see it on that site with a Play button.

    3. It had been on for over a year, but I don't know an exact date.

    4. Thanks, Tim. That kind of blows the "streaming by mistake" theory, at least for this title.

Anonymous, there must be a delay in adding and deleting the play buttons on the DVD site. I tried clicking on Play, but got an error message, "Title Unavailable," when it linked to the streaming site.

    1. Heroes was on MyList and showed an October 1 (Netflix date) expiration on my Vizio and on the Netflix site. But the date disappeared from the Vizio over a week ago. As you note, it still shows as expiring on the Netflix site. I checked some of the shows listed above as still expiring on Netflix and none show an expiration on Vizio. I don't see an expiration date on any other show on MyList. Either Vizio isn't listing a one month notice for TV shows any longer, or it is more accurate than the Netflix site for what actually will expire. Tomorrow is when Vizio should give two weeks notice for October 1 (Netflix) dates.

Sorry for all of the deletions. I had to correct an error and wasn't getting the comment posted in the right place. I'm trying to do this before my morning coffee.

By the way, Heros is fairly good in the first season, but goes downhill thereafter.

    3. Just surprised that Netflix didn't make an effort to secure the new season of Heroes that just came out last year. Nor have they gone after the latest season of the X-Files. Which is a bit strange, I'll admit.

  12. As far as expiring without notice, I think Alphas did that because of how Netflix and SyFy wrote their streaming contract. Warehouse 13 and Eureka, both SyFy shows, expired one season at a time. For those that are interested in the SyFy shows and want to make sure they get at least the first seasons watched before they expire, here are the other ones on my list (sorry, I don't have time right now to search for all of them): Lost Girl, Haven, Continuum, The Almighty Johnsons (note: this is a New Zealand show, but SyFy was airing it in the US, so I don't actually know who owns the rights, but am erring on the side of SyFy), and Helix. I don't know if the way the contract was written of rights applying to each season instead of the show is true for their latest additions, but figured I'd give folks a heads up anyway. Haven and Helix are completely available on the DVD side.

And Ghost Adventures may have had the expiration notice removed because they are getting a new collection, so people may want to keep watching the current collection if they haven't finished those episodes yet. That probably applies to some of the other shows, since they look to be mostly Travel Channel or Food Network shows.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haven and (I think) Helix were definitely made for SyFy shows. Lost Girl, Continuum and Bitten are Canadian shows picked up by SyFy. Seasons showed up about a month after they were shown on SyFy so they may have been licensed directly from the Canadian producer. I will really be ticked off if they start dropping seasons of Lost Girl and Continuum without notice so I have bumped these to near the top of my wish list.

After Season 1 of The Almighty Johnsons was shown on SyFy and began streaming on Netflix, subsequent seasons were streamed on Netflix BEFORE they showed up on SyFy so I have no idea what is going on there but my guess is the rights came directly from New Zealand.

Of course, as Alias, Fringe, Heroes and Psych have proven, nothing is safe anymore.

    2. Thanks, Nica. I appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this.

    3. To clarify, I don't know with absolute certainty that Ghost Adventures IS getting new episodes. That is just my best speculation due to the fact that Collection 1 had no expiration date when it was replaced by Collection 2.

  13. Brian, none of the PBS shows you listed are showing are listed on my iPad as expiring. Are these more "stealth" removals?

    1. I believe Brian gets an extra day's notice on his Roku My List. These should show up for those who have a 2-week app tomorrow, and on the Netflix site on 9/24.

      Delete
    2. It's not quite My List. I have an app that allows me to go through my queue and search through the Netflix catalog (I have to check films/shows by title to see the expiration dates). Found a Nova title that way and decided to check to see if the other titles were leaving. Same thing with the Natures.

    3. I went to the Roku My List. It only shows TV shows expiring this week. However, when I searched for a title that Brian had listed on this blog, it showed up with a 10/1 expiration date (that'/ 9/30 to the rest of us). Still strange that there is no 30-day notice for these shows on my iPad. Maybe they consider them movies.

    1. Inspector Morse is not showing as expiring on my Vizio, so maybe it has stopped giving me a one month notice on expiring shows.

    2. I only get 2 weeks notice for series on the Sony smart TV - when I first click on the title. But if I begin to PLAY an episode, a little blurb comes up at the top-left of the screen advising me it is going to expire on whatever date up to the 30 days. Just tested with Morse, and that's what happened. But I'm not putting any money on anything anymore.

      Delete
    3. I originally saw Inspector Morse expiring on UNOGs. When I click on the title on my iPad, a 9/16 expiration date shows up. Don't know why the PBS shows are being treated differently. Maybe they are considered movies by Netflix because each title only has one episode. On Amazon Prime, titles like Nature and Nova are shown by season, not by episode. I can't tell whether Netflix has access to full seasons or only selected titles.

While there will still be a few PBS titles left after 9/30, the applicable term is "few". Netflix seems to be replacing what remains of its PBS titles with Slow TV and older British history/nature series. I'm sure that Reed Hastings would say the content is unnecessary since you can find it either on Prime or on the PBS web site, which I consider either arrogance or an act of desperation if subscriber numbers are not increasing as fast as anticipated.

    1. Are you joking. Many good movies are expiring most likely for more dubbed foreign crap and lame movies and many good TV shows for more lame originals.

I dread December, January of next year.

      Delete
    2. No, I was expecting somewhere around 200 to 300 movie expirations and it is looking like less than half that number. The one I found were with a little bit of random scrolling. There is not a single title expiring from my shrinking list (once almost 150, now less than 30).

      Delete
    3. Numbers are not bad: so far about 50 movies and a few non-PBS series, and about 40 PBS shows. The almost 50 series that got renewed helped. I'm sure there are more movies out there with a 9/30 last day, but I agree that we'll likely stay well under 200.

As far as content, I guess losing some of the older blockbusters - e.g., Lethal Weapon and Back to the Future - is painful for those who like to watch them again periodically, especially seasoned subscribers who remember the Netflix heyday when there were more, and better choices that stayed longer. The fact that your list is shrinking is an indication that we're not getting the kind of quality we used to, Achernar. Or that you're really disciplined about your watching. :-)

I'm not crazy about the current trend, but I still think Netflix is a good deal. There's not much use in crying over spilled movies, and no one has a gun to our heads. What makes sense to me is either to stay, and be happy with what there is that makes me want to stay, or go, and be happy I don't have to put up with Netflix's annoying ways anymore. Increasingly, there are good alternatives.

    4. "The fact that your list is shrinking is an indication that we're not getting the kind of quality we used to, Achernar. Or that you're really disciplined about your watching."

Both, plus the fact that I focus on movies and watch very few shows. After the Epix disaster where many title in my queue expired without notice, I got much more systematic in dealing with my list. I thought that I remeber that Netflix used to have around 8000 titles. Now it is to to about 5300. The movies they have been adding lately have tended to be more recent stuff which mostly doesn't interest me. I only found four things to add this month.

Now that I am paying the price increase, ther is no disincentive to dropping Netflix when I run short of things to watch, then adding it back a few months later.

I still haven't seen much on Filmstruck. I am hoping that when it come out, that it will be what I am looking for and not too expensive.

  16. Last day 9/30:
    Brighton Rock (2010) R Rated 1hr 51m
Twilight (1998 R Rated 1 hr 31 m. This not the teen flick, it is a neo-noir with Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Reese Witherspoon, Stockard Channing, James Garner and Liev Schreiber.

Also, Heroes now shows an October 1 (Netflix) expiration date. Inspection Morse does not show an expiration. The conclusion is that my Vizio is now giving a two week, rather than a month, notice for an expiring tv series. I'll have to rely on friends here for advanced notice.

  18. The loss of the PBS titles is somewhat offset by the fact that many of these programs (but not all) are currently streaming on PBS.org. You can also watch them at the PBS site on Roku or through the iOS app on Apple devices. You simply need to create an account, which is free. (Incidentally, Carol, I tried your link to The Great British Baking Show and got a notice that there were too many redirects to connect so I would suggest going to PBS.org and doing a search of the program you want to watch.

Some of the titles I have identified on the PBS web site include The Poisoner's Handbook, The Day the Sixties Died, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies and Murder on the Home Front. There are a vast number of episodes from both Nature and Nova, but you need to do a search for each episode (which I was not inclined to do). As previously noted, all episodes of all 3 seasons of The Great British Baking Show are also on the web site. On the flip side, Art & Copy and John Denver: Country Boy are not on the web site.

    1. Thanks, Wellesley72. PBS.org is a great site, with many shows available for free, and it isn't necessary to sign in. I'm afraid I didn't realize, though, that they now have a "Passport" option for many more shows, but that does require signing up, with a monthly donation (minimum $5). I'm sorry to say, the Great British Baking Show episodes all fall into this category, so if you want to see it for "free," you would need to watch it on Netflix before October 1. Please accept my apologies for not understanding that when I put the note with the show. I will change it. And do be aware that the PBS.org content is constantly changing - new things become available, some things expire, and some things change status from free to "Passport" only.

      American Promise

      American Masters:

Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin
Tanaquil Le Clercq (Expired a while back)

Attention -- Limited Time Free Offer on Groupon.com expires on Sunday Sept 25 at 6 AM Eastern Time

Get a FREE 45-day Limited Commercial Plan HULU Subscription for New Customers Only

    https://www.groupon.com/deals/hulu

Once you get your FREE Groupon voucher, you will have 60 days to start your FREE Hulu 45-day Trial. That means you can get the Free voucher today and begin Hulu in October after watching all of your expiring 9/30 Netflix movies.

This is the perfect opportunity to watch a lot of movies and TV shows on Hulu for FREE, especially now that the Hulu service no longer offers any free streaming. They do have a free 7-day trial.

This is also probably the last chance to watch the Criterion Collection movies on Hulu for FREE. Sometime in November, Criterion will be removing their movies from Hulu and starting their own streaming service with the Turner Classic Movies people at FilmStruck.com. No actual start date or pricing has been released yet.

The Hulu Limited Commercial Plan normally costs $7.99 a month. I don't know whether the Commercial Free Plan at $11.99 a month still shows some commercials when viewing a Criterion movie. Maybe Carol or another Hulu member can inform us about these details.

If you are interested in joining Hulu, there is a limited time offer now at the Hulu website to get the Limited Commercial Plan for $5.99 a month for one year - a yearly savings of $24.00. Cancel anytime. The No Commercial Plan is only offered at the full price of $11.99 a month.

    1. Thanks you Larry! (And Carol for checking your email!) Oh Lord, I'll have all three streaming services, for 45 days anyway. My Prime membership actually has to be renewed in 2 days, maybe I'll let it expire for a bit.

    2. Just cancelled Prime. It was automatically renewing TOMORROW. So I've saved a cool $99, for now.

    4. For what it's worth, I saw Shaun the Sheep on Hulu and zero commercials before, during, or after the movie. I think they save them for the TV series (saw several while watching Empire, for example).

    5. Wellesley72 and Brian, with which plan do you have no commercials when watching movies?
The Limited Commercial Plan for $7.99 a month or the No Commercial Plan for $11.99 a month? Thanks.

    6. Larry, I have the $7.99 plan. Contrast this with TubiTV where I had to go through 2 minutes of commercials every 10 minutes to see a one hour documentary.

      Delete
    7. Larry, I don't currently have a Hulu subscription. When I did, it was the $7.99 plan. I don't recall seeing any commercials during any movies, and there really weren't a lot of commercials during the TV shows (at least not enough to pay an additional $4/mo. To have some--but not all--of my TV shows commercial-free. (There are some TV shows in the $11.99 plan that still show a commercial before and after each episode.)

What I really find annoying is having to watch a commercial for an upcoming HBO show on HBO Now before watching a movie or an episode of a series on HBO. I used to think I wouldn't mind watching a trailer for a new Netflix show before viewing something on Netflix, but the use of this practice at HBO proved me wrong. At least Hulu is upfront about showing commercials.

    George Gently - Series 1-6 (2007-2014)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Carol, the rights to both Inspector Morse and George Gently are licensed by RLJ Entertainment, which also owns the streaming site, Acorn TV, which specializes in showing British, Canadian and Australian mysteries and dramas. Both series are streaming (and will continue to stream) on Acorn TV after they expire from Netflix. Inspector Morse (all seasons) also streams on Tubi TV, with commercials.

Both Inspector Morse and George Gently are excellent mysteries. If you wonder why they are leaving, I can only point you to a recent statement by Netflix's chief product officer (whatever that is) who said recently--and here I am paraphrasing--one of the biggest mistakes a company can make is to listen to its customers since they don't know what they want. He then went on to say that while Netflix was not publicly split into two companies after the Quickster debacle, they are internally run as two separate units within the company, which may explain why the DVD side doesn't know what is happening on the streaming side. Also, they view their algorithms as better predictors of success than the wishes of their viewers.

I do not know of any other consumer-oriented company that appears to treat its customers with such disdain, at least publicly.
