My goal: A blog that looks polished and feels complete (not giving up on this!), and that offers helpful content for all, without detracting from the sacred mission of giving followers as much lead time as possible to watch expiring titles.

Thanks to the many contributors who share their time, knowledge, and expertise to keep the blog interesting, informative, and fresh in a variety of ways. It is truly a collaborative effort, and I'm honored to be part of it.

  1. nbc announced, you guessed it, their own streaming service (and it's ad-supported, for those keeping track of that trend), so those nbcuniversal tv series that expired a few years ago en masse are almost certainly never coming back and seasons of recent nbc shows like the mysteries of laura will probably continue to drop off without fanfare. if you like nbc content, i'd say make it a priority.

    1. Thanks(?) for the heads-up, Nica. For anyone thinking of maybe switching plans to a lower premium, here are the choices (with the current and new prices):

Basic, $7.99 per month (increasing to 8.99). Netflix's basic plan doesn't provide high definition viewing and its programs can only be watched on one screen at a time.

Standard, $10.99 per month (increasing to 12.99). The Netflix standard offers HD videos and allows for two simultaneous viewings.

Premium, $13.99 per month (increasing to 15.99). The top tier offering includes the ability to watch four screens at the same time. It's also the only item on Netflix that offers a 4K viewing option.

    2. What a ripoff. NF is not worth $5 anymore nevermind $16, $13. I remembered and loved the old NF with no originals anywhere.

  3. I'm hoping the Dreamworks titles that left are simply a glitch and will be back in a few days. I added them to my DVD queue, and both still have the play button (though it gives you an error when you click on them). I'm not sure if a dedicate page for expired without notice titles would be the best way to handle the reporting and tracking for those that wish to know.

    1. for some reason i don't have a lot of hope about these. Chicken Run has been on my My List for years (i think since it was a "watch instantly" queue). amazon prime video regularly removes titles without notice. these companies get away with doing this for lower-profile content. netflix in particular has pointed to other streaming services, like amazon, to excuse whatever they drop.

as for how to list them, this either doesn't happen that often on netflix or we don't notice many of them (thank you, btw), so i suggest they be listed separately at the end of the month after all of the other content that had notice. to qualify for the list, we have to verify they were ever available on netflix u.s., as some of the stranger commenters list content that never was, and were not previously posted on this blog with notice, as also sometimes is the case.

      Delete
    2. There is also the issue of people listing content as expired without notice when they simply missed the notice, too. I'm open for whatever solution Carol thinks is easiest on her, whether it's a dedicated page where people can comment but Carol doesn't maintain an official list, posting those titles on the complaints page (since they usually end up inciting complaints), or even just requesting we not post expired without notice titles at all. I think we can all agree that the sudden uptick in titles leaving without notice is cause for concern, as I think the majority of us have numerous titles in our queues and don't really want to miss out on seeing them before they leave Netflix. Whether this is Netflix testing the waters to eliminate expiration notices completely or simply a result of everyone and their mothers wanting to start their own streaming services or licensing issues is up for debate.

    3. The Dreamworks titles that disappeared from Netflix were all added to Hulu on January 1 so I doubt that their removal was a glitch. Shame on Netflix for not giving notice!

    4. Soon NF will be nothing but originals and licensed foreign dubbed Indian, German and Korean crap.

      Delete

    5. Well, I'm sorry to say that NONE of the titles in Nica's original comment have returned, so I'm thinkin' Travis and Wellesley72 are right about them not coming back. I have to wonder if Netflix intentionally removed them without any announcement, because these are some fairly heavyweight titles, and the outcry would have been substantial. All the media is so in love with Netflix that no one seems to notice their policies around exiting titles are abominable.

Anyway, here is my thinking about how to handle such titles in the future:
      > I'm going to put a note on the main page regarding titles expired without notice, probably at the end of the list. (I'll get to this in the next several days.)
      > I definitely think these titles should be noted, when we know about them, but also realize there will probably be some we don't catch. We are all already giving our time to make the blog as complete as possible, but walking against the mighty wind of Netflix can get to even the most dedicated soul. I'm putting this goal in the "do the best we can, but don't worry to much about it" category.
      > I think the main page comments is the most appropriate place for readers to share these titles. In the note I'm going to write, I'll give some guidelines.
      > I don't want to commit to including disappeared titles on the list as we go (as I have sometimes done in the past). I also want to avoid a bunch of back-and-forth (it's gone/oh, now it's back/here's what happened, etc., etc.) So, I think it makes sense to include the truly gone-without-notice titles when I archive the month. I'll put those titles that left and didn't come back at the bottom of the month with an explanatory header.

Thanks everyone for your interest and ideas - they were very helpful.

  4. Tony R., out of curiosity, do you find PG-13 content you like? I think you've mentioned PG content you like.

So, recently, somebody said you were "whinging." I'm not going to be negative, but I am shocked you didn't dump NF months ago.

My wife and I use the library a lot - burn the DVDs onto our multi-terabyte hard drive, and watch at our convenience, delete, repeat.
The same day or weekend a movie opens, we can add it to our library waiting list queue.

  5. It would be great if there was a link added to your list which would perform a Google search with one click. I search Google for listed titles by triple clicking to the right of one to select the entire name and date, right clicking the selected title, and then selecting "Search Google for ..." from the right click menu. Google usually shows me if there are other streaming sites where the title is.

    1. Thanks Anonymous. I've also wished I could add a link to Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb for each film/series. Others might have their own ideas. Unfortunately, adding such links is more than the scope of this blog allows.

I tried your method, and it actually works very well. Google shows not only where it's streaming, but also has the links to the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes pages for the title. The difference between the time it would take to click on one link and the time it takes to use your method is minimal compared to the time it would take me to add such a link for each title, even with an automated system like Larry G created for the links to the Netflix pages. I'm sorry I'm unable to oblige your idea, but thanks for sharing it and your current work-around.

  6. The Criterion Channel has pre-launched. You can sign up now to become a Charter Subscriber. Criterion says Charter Subscribers receive a discounted price and a 30 day free trial (rather than 14 day). The official launch date is April 8. Go to https://www.criterion.com/ for information.

There is also a Movie of the Week each Wednesday until launch. This week’s is “Mikey and Nicky” 1976, direct by Elaine May staring Peter Falk and John Cassavetes.

From the information they give about the new service, it looks like all of things like Tuesday Night Short Plus Feature; Friday Night Double Feature; Observations on Film Art; etc. from the old Criterion Channel under FilmStruck will continue. The service supports a number of streaming devices. It uses the VHX app. It is already working (with just the one movie) on my Roku.

Once it launches and I have had a little time to try it, I will post how I think it compares to the old FilmStruck.

  7. Continuing the discussion begun on 2/13 on the expiration page between Travis and me about Disney expiration dates as posted on the blog What's on Netflix, I have NOT been able to find evidence online that "it's now been confirmed" by Netflix that his expiration dates are correct. We'll just have to wait until the press release comes out in a few days and see if his "Beauty and the Beast" date is correct. If it is, it's certain to be on the press release and it will lend the rest of What's on Netflix's list more credibility.

    ReplyDelete

    1. the dates he posted are probably true, if he's confirmed that those that expired so far have fallen on that exact interval. however, educated guesses aren't fact. that's what separates this blog from that one.

    2. Also I should note that What's on Netflix lists a different date for "Beauty and the Beast" on its page of March expirations.

  8. Not sure if anyone has noted it on this site previously, but "Tubi Free TV" was recommended to me about 6 weeks ago. For the last 2+ years about 90% of my watching has been Netflix. I have pretty much seen every movie that Netflix streams in English, so Tubi has now become my main source of films.
There are commercials, but they are usually very limited, about 30 to 40 seconds at a time and range from about once to maybe six times per film (I am assuming more popular titles have more ads). Oddly it seems to be the same ad every time for the same film. There are thousands of titles and you can create your own queue. They also send a monthly email letting me know what is expiring and what is being added. I can't speak to the completeness of their list, but it is encouraging that they are up front about it. So far I have watched more than 100 films and have created an excel list of another ~650 that I plan to watch over the next half year. Anomalies I have noticed so far are they seem to use alternate titles fairly often (the DVD release title maybe), the year of release is often different from imdb (sometimes by several years), and there can be some freezing of the video, although the audio always seems to be fine.
In any case, I just wanted to pass the name of the site along in case anyone else is looking for a wider variety of titles.

    1. Eric, i left a similar but less thorough quick review on the now offline Streaming Services Guide page. i agree with you that this is a great alternative. i was surprised at the number of quality or interesting titles available when i looked at it. the main point of my previous comment was that long-time netflix streamers will recognize both the content and the form.

i do my watching on a variety of sources and right now have plenty to watch commercial free, but it's extremely comforting to know that this platform is around. i could cancel my pay services if i wanted to and find new-to-me movies and shows on there to watch for free that i know i would enjoy.

      Delete
    2. I can't use ad supported media. But years ago NF got 90% of my viewership now it is lucky to get ones a week for a movie and that's it. Amazon and Hulu (ad-free plan) gets 90% of my viewing. The other 10% goes to DC Universe and Boomerang.

    1. Britbox is being launched as a Netflix competitor in the UK, albeit with a lot of grumbling from people who already pay a TV license fee for BBC content. How can Derek leave Netflix? Isn't it a Netflix original?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes it's unusual, but "Derek" is what Netflix SHOULD call an Exclusive, rather than an Original, since it was originally produced by and broadcast on Britain's Channel 4, and then Netflix bought the exclusive streaming rights. At least for a few years, now that's ending.

Netflix will never distinguish between true originals and exclusives, they just slap the Original label on everything. While it is still unusual, "Original" shows (and maybe even movies) that Netflix doesn't own outright can and will expire.

      Delete
    2. Stupid NF again. Really if it is a true original aka "Stranger Things" mark it as Netflix Original if it is exclusive then mark it as Netflix Exclusive. This includes there annoying intro should have two will say Netflix Originals another Netflix Exclude which can expire.

      Delete
    3. just to state the obvious, netflix itself doesn't distinguish what you call an exclusive rather than an original. right now they brand these all "n series". they may be more inclined to renew one of these than an "n stand-up", but don't count on it. (you may just as likely see the series streaming on another subscription.)

    2. As much as I complain about NF Originals they do have more family originals and they let you block content higher than PG-13, TV-14 something Amazon and Hulu don't.

Amazon and Hulu also have nothing but new mature originals what makes me keep them is the ever increasing licensed content but still annoying I can't hide R, MA garbage like I can do on NF.

    5. because i mentioned this hitler comedy was a covert netflix original and there was recent discussion on the current expirations page about netflix removing its own originals. we could speculate on why they quietly removed this one given the sociopolitical climate, but there probably is no need. that they never marked this in the US as one of their originals makes it clear enough they didn't want to attract attention to it.

    2. they now add so few non-Original titles that https://www.netflix.com/browse/just-added redirects to https://www.netflix.com/browse. for the last few weeks, it had just been saying 0 added this week. in the time before that, it would increasingly show rows of netflix-branded content.

      Delete
    3. I don't think there's ever been a week that zero non-Original titles have been added, has there? There's just been a lot fewer of them. Zero recent ones, yes. This week "Burning" was added, a true anomaly, an award-winning very recent non-Original.

      Delete
    4. i'm just telling you what the page said. 0 was never an accurate number. it just meant no one was updating the page because i believe there was a degree of curation (too many hindi and other foreign language films in a row to be randomly sorted). finally they seem to have given up and just forwarded the link to the main page.

(for anyone confused, around friday, netflix used to splash on its homepage it added x number of titles that week, with a further link to a whole page displaying them. that same link could be viewed at any time, and usually it had what was added in the last 7 days, even when that wasn't much. what i didn't know for a while was that netflix wanted to synch with my browser and account, to make sure i wasn't a web crawler or other bot, so there were times in the past that i couldn't get the page to load when not clicked through the homepage. when i eventually created a 2nd profile, choosing which account provided the synch needed to load the page. now that doesn't work, and i think they've abandoned the page, at least for now, because it drew attention to how little non-"Original" content they were adding. this is not to be confused with the category or page for "recently added" titles, as this particular link was truly the last 7 days.)

      Delete
    5. That was silly of me, of course "0 added this week" was only because the link stopped functioning. Don't know why I focused on that phrase.

      Delete
    6. right, they stopped updating the page, but if you didn't know better and had visited the page through your history or bookmarks and saw that you might actually believe they added nothing. surely, if you are looking for content other than netflix "originals" it can seem like they aren't really adding anything lately anyway. Unknown might have been watching A24 titles that have the 2nd window at netflix after leaving prime. i have noticed some theatrical releases about 2-5 years old being added lately. it just overwhelmingly is netflix's b movies and licensed tv series.

  16. I promised some time ago that I would post a review of the Criterion Channel after having some experience with it. I will keep this fairly short since I doubt that anyone who is still on Netflix would be interested in the serious film buff content that is on Criterion.

It is very similar to the old FilmStruck. In addition to the Criterion catalog, they are licensing films from a variety of sources. They still have a broad focus, classics both Hollywood and British; independent; art house and international films. Each day, particular items are featured, but most new content is actually posted at the beginning of the month. Temporary films are usually available for 3 to 6 months, but a few films stay as short as a month. There are currently about 1800 features and shorts on Criterion plus very many extras. They have a list of titles expiring at the end of the current month available on both the web site and app.

They still have Tuesday Short + Feature; Friday Double Feature; Observations on Film Art (added monthly) plus many other categories.

It is not family friendly, except for the new Saturday Matinees, although some of these I would recommend for kids at least well into grade school (subtitles).

While it has not been completely glitch free, it is generally pretty solid. The technical support has been excellent. I have contacted technical support a couple of time and the issues have been resolve quickly and courteously.

I believe that the web site, https://www.criterionchannel.com/browse is browsable without joining. You can also go to https://www.criterion.com/current/category/19-on-the-channel to see the featured content for each month since the launch in April.

  17. Hello Achenar

Thank you for your post, it is very interesting. I just wonder, why do you think that people who are on Netflix would not be interested in Criterion?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Because the two services have completely different focuses. Netflix is a mass market service focusing on originals, blockbusters and TV series.

Criterion is a niche service focusing strictly on film, classic; art house; etc.

    Everyone's interests are different.

Netflix used to have some classic content, but it is mostly gone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

    1. While it's true that everyone's interests are different, I think the readers of this blog are more likely to have a broader view of what makes for a good viewing experience. I sense a lot of movie/series knowledge and sophistication in many comments our readers make.

Many of us have expressed disappointment at the loss of classic content on Netflix, so the Criterion Channel has special appeal. But we also like action blockbusters, cheesy horror, Korean romantic series, or any of the many genres prevalent on Netflix. Some of us want it all, and the Criterion Channel offers fare that is no longer in good supply on Netflix.

    2. Hello Achenar

I agree with you that Netflix have lot of blockbuster content and I am sure that a lot of their subscribers are fans of "Friends" and superhero movies. I remember posts on this web site about people canceling their subscriptions if "Friends" leave Netflix.
However, I think that there are also subscribers that like other genres. Netflix is disrespectful toward their subscribers in a way of not giving enough information and messing around with functionality and design of user interface, but people can find little and big gems hidden under layers and layers of different titles.
For us who like to experiment with genres, and origin of movies, especially foreign originals that are remade for American public (even Oscar wining movies like "Departed" that is copy of Hong Kong "Infernal affairs") your post about Criterion channel is very helpful and welcomed. I browsed through their content little bit and I found some movies that i watched or rented dvd from Netflix.
Again, thank you for sharing your experience with Criterion. I'm looking forward to more posts about this or any other streaming service or channel.

    3. Speaking of origins of movies, one that is not widely known is the movie that the original Star Wars (1977) is based on, Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress” (1958). Criterion has an extra for “The Hidden Fortress” where George Lucas discusses elements he borrowed from Kurosawa.

Kurosawa did his share of borrowing as well. His film “Ran” (1985) borrows its plot from Shakespeare’s “King Lear”.

As the streaming wars are heating up, I don’t see the advantages in annoying the subscribers Netflix still has. Great going, Netflix!

  22. Sigh, well gosh, I have one of each of those and it's not in my budget to replace them. What are we to watch on? A dinky little phone screen? Looks like my plan to watch my queue and cancel subscription is on. Thanks for the heads up!

    1. But what's even more annoying is the amount of garbage that will go into the environment and another excessive use of dwindling resources to make new devices. One day it'll all run out and we'll be back to hand shadows on the wall ;)

    2. You can get a newer Roku or Firestick for around $35 to plug into your older tv. But it will have the new programming, i.e., thumb ratings and only a quick flash of a one week expiration date when a show starts.

    3. Thanks so much for posting this info, CanandaiguaNY. I'm wondering how much longer Netflix will continue to give two weeks notice for expiring movies on the newer devices. I'm not counting on forever.

Everyone - if you want more specific info, e.g., how old the affected devices are, please see the article CanandaiguaNY referenced, which I have copied here:
      https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/8/20955155/netflix-samsung-vizio-smart-tv-roku-set-top-box-support-ending-date

Other alternatives to buying a new TV or other device: Dish Network offers Netflix as part of its package (only 1 week's notice, though). Not sure about other cable/satellite companies. Then, of course, there's always ye old HDMI cord - a cheap and somewhat clunky, but still effective way to watch on your TV instead of the computer.

  23. Not sure if this belongs on the main page, so I'll post it here.

Now that Disney Plus is live, we can get dates for when Disney titles that are currently on Netflix will move over there. We already know about Coco expiring on the 28th, and D+ lists it as coming on the 29th, so I'm guessing the last Netflix day for anything else will be the day before it moves to D+.

    Presumed last day on Netflix
    12/4
    Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

    12/25
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

    3/3/2020
    Black Panther (2018)

    3/14/2020
    G-Force (2009)

    3/24/2020
    A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

    6/22/2020
    Tarzan (1999)

    6/24/2020
    Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

    6/30/2020
    Race to Witch Mountain (2009)

    7/8/2020
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

    7/28/2020
    Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

    7/29/2020
    Incredibles 2 (2018)

    9/4/2020
    Christopher Robin (2018)

    12/20/2020
    Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)

    1/8/2021
    Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

The article this info comes from only lists these "major" movies, but 'lesser' movies and shows probably have dates on Disney Plus, too (I'm not planning to subscribe to it any time soon, so can't check myself).

Given the somewhat speculative nature of these dates, how far off some of them are, and how many there could be, might a separate page for Disney Plus dates be warranted?

    1. Thanks for listing these out, Elekata. I like your idea of making a dedicated page for these (like we did when all the FOX shows left). I'll spend some time this weekend checking out the new Disney site, and hopefully have something pulled together by Monday.

  24. Okay, so I'm signed up for Disney Plus. I couldn't find a page for "What's Coming When." All I can do is search Disney Plus for everything that's on Netflix, and see what comes up - if it's there or if it has an arrival date (as does Coco, for example). The thing is, not all Disney content plays by the same rules, contract-wise. For example, one of the "lesser" films is The Princess and the Frog. It is streaming on Netflix now, and also streaming on Disney Plus now, so that doesn't give us a clue about when it will be leaving Netflix.

I'm going to need more time to scope all this out.

Elekata, can you share where you found the info in your comment? For now, I think your list can act as a guideline to help us decide which films to watch first. I'm not sure everything will follow the rule that would seem to apply, but it's certainly something to consider. I'm going to do more research to see if I can come up with more titles that we might get a clue about.

    2. A couple of questions on Disney+ if you know. There are a small handfull of Disney classics I would like to see when I get more time.

Is there a "permanent" back catalog maintained like Criterion, or are titles cycled in an out like most streaming services and Disney vault?

Is there any way, short of signing up for a free trial, to see what is currently in their catalog?

    3. Hi Achernar,
I haven't had any time to get familiar with how Disney+ works. I wondered the same thing as you, and everything I looked up, e.g., Cinderella, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, are there. It seems logical that nothing is going to expire anytime soon, so if you want to post a list of what you're wondering about, I'll be happy to look them up to see if they're there. Feel free to email me if you prefer: cwenmoth@yahoo.com.

    4. around the time of the launch, i read articles about what wasn't (yet) on there due to existing licensing deals like with netflix as well as true outliers like song of the south, with the implication being that if it's disney and isn't a new or very recent theatrical release and doesn't fall under the categories of tied up exclusive or too toxic for our times, it's up there.

    5. Here are two short lists of Disney films that perhaps you could look up for me on Disney+ when you get some time.

The first has films that were include on various American Film Institute lists.
      101 Dalmatians (1961), 03V-31
      Bambi (1942), 03V-20, 08A-3
      Beauty and the Beast (1991), 02-34, 06M-22, 08A-7
      Cinderella (1950), 08A-9
      Fantasia (1940), 98-58, 08A-5
      Finding Nemo (Pixar) (2003), 08A-10
Lady and the Tramp (1955), 02-95
      Mary Poppins (1964), 04-36, 06M-6
      Pinocchio (1940), 04-7, 06C-38, 08A-2
      Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), 98-49, 03V-10, 04-19, 07-34, 08A-1
Song of the South (1946), 04-47 (I know this one is not on Disney+, but included it for completeness)
      The Lion King (1994), 04-99, 08A-4
      Toy Story (Pixar) (1995), 07-99, 08A-6
The codes at the end are in which lists they were included by year and rank. If you are interested, the lists are available on Wikipedia. Just search for AFI 100.

The second list has Disney shorts originally filmed in 3D. I know that they won’t be in 3D on Disney+, but am interested in them anyway.
      3D Jamboree (1956)
      Captain Eo (1986)
      Melody (1953)
      Working for Peanuts (1953)

      Thanks!

    6. Hi Achernar,

From your first list, the only 2 that are NOT streaming on Disney+ are Song of the South (which you knew) and 101 Dalmations. The Glenn Close version is there, as well as the sequels to each version, but no original, and no note about when it might arrive. Couldn't find it streaming anywhere else, so not sure what the issue is.

Unfortunately, none of the shorts on your second list are on Disney+. No notes, either.

    7. Hi Carol,

Thanks for the feedback. I will likely try out Disney+, but not until spring when I have more time. I don't expect to stay on it very long, just long enough to see what I want.

I have no plans to try to see every film in every AFI list but do hope to complete the two AFI Top 100 lists, 1998 and 2007, 123 films total. Eight let to go and two of those are now available on "free with ads" sites.

  26. Ya know when Amazon told me my device was too old to stream on anymore, they gave me a 40 gift certificate for buying a fire stick. When netflix told me my device would no longer work, they just gave me the middle finger and said figure it out. Well I have the new fire stick so I can still get netflix but I really miss being able to go to the back of the list from the front of the list and seeing what number the movies are so I know how many movies are in my list. The ratings don't matter so much anymore Netflix already chased me away from ratings on Netflix and I only rate on IMDB now.

  27. Is anyone else unable to change the order of My List? I have been unable for at least a week. I've chatted with Netflix about this a couple of times. It's a(nother) known problem that they are working on with no estimated resolution date. I tried the trick of removing a title from My List then adding it back hoping it would appear at the top -- no go; added titles seem to appear about 20 positions down in the list.

The odd thing is that I have two profiles set up in my account, and only one (my primary one, of course) is affected. No problems changing My List order in the other. As a workaround, I'm going to add expiring titles to that working profile so I can move them to the top as a reminder to watch.

    1. Sorry for the delayed response, but I've been having issues with the order for a while. Even new titles are being added wherever they want somewhere near the top.

    2. This first started happening for me back in September. I have no control over the placement of anything on any of my profiles except that Delete usually works (but not always). "Move to top" doesn't work at all. Given Netflix's record for correcting things like this, I don't have a lot of hope for a fix.

      Delete
    3. For anyone interested, Netflix's response to the question of when this problem will be fixed continues to be (paraphrased) "We are aware and are researching it." I contact them periodically about this issue, primarily to remind them that customers notice and do not appreciate the absurd length of time required to fix ... well, anything. :D

    4. Thanks for letting us know, Barbara D. I fear the real answer to your question is "never." This is a big problem for me because I use My List to attach the links to the titles. Instead of being able to grab all the new links for titles going on the list in one fell swoop from the top of My List, I have to go through the whole list and get them one by one, wherever they happened to fall. Arrgghh!

  28. I'm assuming the list of devices that have a 2-week notice is one of the offline pages, so I don't know if the TV I just got would already be on it. Anyway, I just got a new LG 4K UHD Smart TV and it does provide the 2-week notice.

  29. Streaming to my Visio, which is more than 5 years old, closer to 8 I think, also wasn’t cancelled by Netflix. This surprised me, as YouTube had earlier stopped streaming to it. Apparently, the set of affected devices is much smaller than I had feared.

Also, for a long time I have not, usually, been able to reply to this blog using my iPad and the Safari browser (it works very sporadically). It does not recognize my Google account--quite possibly because of all the privacy controls I've turned on. I have to go my desktop Mac, using the Firefox browser, to post a reply, as I'm doing now. But last night, while trolling through Google to see it I could find out how to get the iPad to recognize my account, I found a box to change my user name. This wasn't there the last time I looked. So, at last, I can be geographically correct (I'm not in Canandaigua NY anymore) and Carol's blog can move just slightly closer toward her goal of perfect accuracy.

  30. For those who once used the Kanopy service to view free movies made available by your local public library, please note that you may now be able to use the OverDrive service.

Go to this link to begin access to library videos in the Chrome browser:
         https://www.overdrive.com/libraries
Enter your zip code and search to see if your library is enrolled in the service. If it is, go to the library website and make a browser bookmark.

Then under the Collections heading, select Available Videos to see the list of movies. There are also eBook, Kindle book and Audiobook collections. All you need is a library card to sign in to the OverDrive service.

For help getting started with OverDrive and for info on how to access from different devices and with apps, see this link:

    1. It's not just you, Tim. I talked to Customer Service. The representative didn't even know there was such a thing as a Manual My List so it was a bit of an uphill battle, but once I walked him through it, he checked with someone else, and said that IT was aware of the problem. Then he asked me several questions about my computer and wifi service (as if that's where the problems is - for real, Netflix??).

Anyway, if anyone else has a non-loading manual My List, call Netflix Customer Service if you have time. The more people complaining, the higher priority it will be for them.

    1. Didn't have a problem with My List on my laptop/web browser. On my Smart TV, I occasionally get a blank My List - fixed by either changing profiles and then changing back, or by power cycling the TV.

Is the manual sort problem like the following. I had something like this happen years ago and it came back about a month ago. A ghost movie or two or three (which you can't see because they aren't yet available to watch but will be soon according to NF tech support years ago), so you can't precisely order your list near the top. You also can't send a movie to the very top - it will fall whatever the number of ghost movies are below the top slot.

      Delete

    2. Hi Anonymous, the ordering problem I have (that also sounds like what UnclePennyBags is experiencing) is not a matter of ghost movies. The manual list simply won't do what you ask it to. Anything I try to move, either by clicking "move to top," or by dragging it up or down whatever number of titles I want to move it, the title just goes back to where it was. Also, when adding titles, they don't appear at either the top or bottom of the list, but randomly throughout the list - I can't see any rhyme or reason why titles land where they do. When I add several titles, they can all end up in different places, or some may end up grouped, but they're never all together in one place. The only function that still seems to work is "Delete."

I tried starting a fresh list with an unoccupied profile, and it worked the way it was supposed to for a while, but then went rogue at some point, so it might be a problem that starts after a certain number of titles. I didn't bother to count at the time.

  34. Has anyone noticed that the brilliant Netflix coders have ruined something again. This time they ruined the App on the phones. It was a brilliant decision back when they decided to let you download movies to your phone. I could download movies at home and then when I went places like the airplane or on vacation where I would have no connection to internet I could still see movies. Now some idiot put code in the app that has to go to Netflix and if it can't connect to Netflix it errors out and doesn't let you enter app. There is no way to watch your downloaded movies without a connection to netflix. I did find that if you open app and leave it open before you lose connection that then you can watch downloaded movies. The point is, this was never the case I could open the app and watch my downloaded movies without needing a connection. Now the morons changed that and instead of putting code that detected the failure and sent you to your downloaded movies, it just errors out and doesn't open the app.

    1. Yes, this has been an ongoing problem for quite a while now. Not sure what sets it in motion, but several people have written about this problem, and there doesn't seem to be much hope that it will get fixed so we can order things the way we want anytime soon - or ever.

      Delete
    2. I may have shared this tip before, but I can't recall so ... I had two profiles and the sorting issue affected only my primary profile, the one where I have hundreds of titles in My List, of course. *eye-roll* My workaround was to create a new (third) profile strictly for expiring titles, and I am able to reorder in that profile with no problem. I keep expiring titles in my primary My List as well, and I watch from there so that my Watching Activity and Ratings are all in one place. The "expiring titles" profile lets me see at a glance which titles to either watch or delete from my primary list.
A cleaner solution would be to duplicate primary My List in a new profile. I opted not to do that (at least for now) because it would be quite time-consuming in my case, and all for nothing if total number of titles happens to be a cause of the ordering malfunction and renders the new profile unsortable too.

This may not be the correct place to leave comment, as it is just a general comment/frustration, but the general comment page is from 12/2019. Anyway, I noticed today in the new website user interface (not app) that the date of release is no longer available when you get more info from a thumbnail. When expanded you can view suggestions for similar items - those all have dates of release - but if you were to go to any of those suggestions directly, you would again be deprived of the knowledge of the release date. It may seem minor, but I actually use that info a lot. For instance when deciding how current the subject matter is, etc. Any idea of how to let Netflix know I don't like it?

FWIW, I can see release year in expanded view, right below the title along with % match (if available), MPA rating, and length in hrs/mins. I am using a Windows 10 laptop, and I checked using both Chrome and Edge browsers. The interface does not look new to me, though, so that's odd too.

To let Netflix know you don't like it, you can call or open a chat to Netflix Customer Service. I'm almost certain they will respond in one of the following ways:
    1) We are not aware of any problem, and then they may/will explain to you how to use the website (as if you don't know already),
    2) We are aware of the problem and have a team working to fix it, or
    3) Okay, thanks for telling us. We value your business and our customers are our top priority. Can we help you with anything else today? (as if they helped you with something already.)

Fast forward to any future point in time: The problem will exist still, and you will get the exact same answers every time you contact them to report it. :D

    1. thanks for the comment. i was annoyed by this, too, but didn't say anything because i'm so used to netflix making these dumb "improvements." i, too, benefit from seeing the year of release and cannot understand why they removed it.

i would normally recommend calling, but they outdid themselves in uselessness working from home the last time i called; the guy sounded like i woke him up and couldn't pay attention. the then-new problems i called about remain in place 2 1/2 months later, and that's with me separately reporting them online through the viewing activity page every time after i watch something. next time i call, i'll ask for a supervisor, but i felt a little bad for him because this was near the beginning of work from home, presumably. (instead of a call center in the background, i heard a screaming child, but then netflix does hire them young.)

on a side note, i am still slowly transferring my remaining netflix star ratings to imdb. sometimes i go to the netflix dvd site to remind myself which movie or series by that name is the one i saw and rated. i find that often since then netflix has removed its dvd entry for that title. the workaround for me has been to pull up the record on the netflix streaming site, which still showed the plot summary, year, limited cast, i think director, and sometimes an image even when the title wasn't streaming (which is the majority of the time). since the recent changeover, a lot of that information has been removed, making it harder or impossible to tell what it was. in some cases, the title doesn't come up at all and forwards to the homepage, just like its dvd entry does. my newer workaround involves retrieving an old public version of the dvd page via the archive.org wayback machine so i know what i'm rating.
