  1. Welcome to a brand new, fresh and clean Discussions page! What's on your mind?

    1. Why doesn't NETFLIX ever produce the DVDs from its "Saved" list? My list goes back about 10 years and not one title has ever shown up. It's ironic -- and insulting -- to be reminded periodically that my cue is low and that I need to add more titles. I am an older subscriber and each year I find less and less of the kind of films I'd like to watch. Most of what I see under "New Releases" seems geared to the tastes of 12-year-old boys. What about us adults who are looking for quality programming? I'm getting close to cancelling my subscription as I have a neighbor who finds a great selection of DVDs free for the asking at our local public library.

    2. The library is a great source for DVDs. I don't have a Netflix DVD subscription anymore, but from what I've heard, it sounds like it's not what it used to be. Good luck!

    3. i still have the DVD sub, not the streaming. i can confirm the DVD catalog continues to dwindle: i have my own list of films i want to watch eventually, and when i recently went through it for the express purpose of adding titles to my queue before the DVD service goes kaput, i was surprised by what was no longer available, in some cases wiped off the site entirely, not available to save.

that said, i have more in my queue than i will probably be able to rent before the service ends, perhaps sooner than planned as part of the company's ongoing cost cutting even though profitable. Anonymous is welcome to change his/her address to mine and subsidize my subscription, particularly as i only get one a week even with same day turnaround on my part.

Anonymous did not say what exactly he or she wants to watch that netflix offers less of now. the recommendations page is offline and was always intended for netflix streaming, but i'd be happy to make recommendations that are available on DVD through netflix with some guidance on what he or she is interested in. leave your contact information. i would also direct the poster to our "Streaming Services Guide" page with the hunch that, for streaming, criterion and maybe even mubi may cater to his or her tastes.

    4. Criterion is good - they have a lot of lesser known older films that are still quite good. I also like HBO Max. They have quite a few old movies, including more than 20 best-movie Oscar winners, such as Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, and On the Waterfront. They also have new stuff, like Guillermo del Toro's remake of Nightmare Alley. I think they both offer a free trial, and you can search Criterion Channel without having to sign up at all.

Travis, if you have suggestions for Netflix DVDs worth watching, how about listing them on the DVD Discussions page? Maybe let us know here to look there?

    5. i'm using an old tv and devices, so i can't try hbo max, but my understanding is that in addition to its warner brothers catalog (including hbo), it features a lot of criterion and tcm titles. i plan to subscribe in the future.

i don't know that Anonymous was really interested in old movies (or tv series, for that matter) just because of being "older" and describing what netflix advertises as for "12-year-old boys." a lot of people older than 12 would agree with that assessment but still seek out other current and recent releases. that's why i ask for examples of what he or she likes and offer to continue the conversation privately. i do agree that there was a better blog page for this discussion.

    6. Has Netflix DVD announced a going-out-of-business date?

      Delete
    7. not that i've seen. netflix just laid off another 3% of its staff. i keep wondering whether some of the layoffs this year are in the dvd division. you were just in the same old post i was, so maybe you saw that a few years ago it was 2022 that it was expected the dvd service would end. i haven't heard about that since. no one covers it. journalists frequently refer to it as a bygone service. i keep getting my one disc in the mail after 4 postal days.

  2. I'll happily jump in and post to the squeaky clean Discussions page? Glad to see that the regular blog page is up and working again, not that the work around was any problem to deal with. Can you share as to what was causing it to be unpublished? Were Zack and Miri Make a ---- (not saying just in case!) the problem after all?

    1. I think Zack and Miri are in the clear. I posted an update at the top of the Back-Up page that shares what I finally concluded about the cause of the unpublishing (links to the comment section, as ridiculous as that sounds). Even though my explanation is there, further comments about it would be best on this Discussions page, so I'm glad you asked about it here, LynnK.

The link to the back-up page is at the top of the sidebar.

  3. As Frasier Crane would say, "What fresh new hell is this?"

Netflix no longer automatically removes fully watched movies from Continue Watching.

On a Smart TV, you have to - for each and every already watched movie - click "Remove from Continue Watching." One by one by one...

On a laptop, you have to -for each and every already watched movie - click "Remove from row." One by one by one...

I called NF Customer Service and complained. I said it's not even logical - if you've fully WATCHED the movie, why does it stay in CONTINUE watching. Please revert it back to the old, logical way.

    1. Sometimes I have to wonder who makes these kinds of decisions, and, for goodness sake, why??

I must confess, I've gotten to the age where I sometimes (okay, regularly) fall asleep while watching, and the movie plays out. For me, it would work to have the movie stay in "continue watching," but I don't mind finding the movie again so I can watch what I missed. Those who actually see the whole movie shouldn't have to go through the rigmarole you describe.

Sometimes it seems like the Netflix people who come up with ideas for changes, and make decisions for implementing changes don't actually use the service. I think they might pay attention if enough people call in and complain about something. This sounds like something that a lot of people won't like, so I hope maybe they'll get enough complaints to put it back the way it was.

    2. I enjoyed your response, Carol.

I was amused to find out that, potentially, either a) this new feature is buggy (movies I removed from "Continue Watching" came back a few minutes later and/or b) you have to do it for each individual queue you have... Time will tell whether it's a, b, or a&b...

      Delete
    3. that's how it used to be, except it was called "recently watched" instead of "continue watching." i watch so little and it's mostly expiring content that it doesn't affect me. i also wouldn't be surprised if it varies by device. (hey, btw, i recently used an old apple tv, and like another regular, it still had star ratings. i didn't try adding any, but it was a nice throwback to see the average or predicted ratings.)

i'm more bothered by my list still being in a new random order every time i do want to watch something. that's even less logical. i know i could use the search, but i still scroll through dozens or hundreds of titles on principle because it shouldn't be that difficult to find. it sure was easier when i could move it to the top.

      Delete
    4. Travis, you're 100% right - random sucks.

Netflix: First, let's take away users ability to order their lists manually. DONE

Netflix: Ok, now let's RANDOMIZE all the movies in their list. DONE

Netflix: Ok, now, rather than be like YouTube where you can use voice input to search, let's have them do it the slowest way possible - letter by letter. UM, WE DID THAT YEARS AGO...

Netflix: Perfect - we have designed the most non-user friendly interface possible.

    5. I quit using the My List a couple years ago. It had so many glitches it was impossible to use sufficiently and effectively...cleared it free so now that aspect is worry free.

Also, I haven't run into the problem of movies/shows not leaving "Continue Watching" yet. I've watched several movies and a couple series/shows and they all have removed themselves when finished...and that's on 4 platforms (I use firestick, desktop, phone/ipad and two smart roku tvs).

      Delete
    6. My list isn't as random as I originally thought, and maybe you'll notice this with yours as well. I keep a spreadsheet, and the only things on my list are things I am actively watching, intend to watch in the near future, or shows that may be waiting for new seasons. I have 23 items on my list. Here is how Netflix has them ordered. Everything I'm actively watching is last, except for Squid Game, which we finished, and that is sitting dead last right now. At the very top of the list, brand new items that were added automatically when I asked Netflix to "remind me", and shows I haven't started yet. Sandwiched in the middle, shows that I have finished, but am waiting for more seasons, (TWD, Disenchantment), or shows I have finished that haven't announced more seasons but also haven't been officially canceled, (Magic For Humans, Chef's Table.)

So not entirely random. Unwatched items pushed to the top, things you are watching at the bottom because you are most likely able to quickly access those in your Continue Watching. Is anyone else seeing this pattern as well?

      Delete
    7. the algorithm isn't really random, but it feels that way.

      to your points:
-again, with the caveat that i don't watch much, the series i recently watched were not toward the beginning of my list. (they were also not recently added.) netflix does seem to use the logic of content actively watched does not need to be toward the top because it will be available elsewhere perhaps even more intuitive. (that doesn't make it any less of a hassle when i want to find it on my list to start watching. it could be anywhere.)
-shows with new seasons are promoted to the top even if the series has been in my list for a long time.
-content i added recently is near the top, at least for awhile. not surprisingly, netflix's own content is at the very top.
-i can see a movie that comes and goes and is back again is near here as well. i'll keep an eye out for any more of these, perhaps deeper in my list, when i check for monthly expirations.
-more of netflix's own content rounds out the top despite not having new episodes and not being recently added.
-three anime series that have been in my list from months to years are in the top 20 because i watched k-on! some weeks back.
-i don't keep tv series in my list waiting for new episodes only, so that doesn't pertain to me. i also generally don't add movies i've already seen. one of the rare ones i had that returned a few weeks back was toward the top, but it was only because it was "new." netflix doesn't recognize my 5,500 netflix.com ratings at all anymore. all of the content it shows me to watch again i streamed on netflix. it stopped syncing netflix dvd ratings a few years ago and now ignores even the thousands of ratings it had stored, so it's always advertising old movies as if it doesn't know i've rated (and seen) them.

this algorithm may work or be of little import for some, but it should still be only optional for those of us who prefer to order our own list. that functionality existed since the beginning, so there remains no compelling reason why it was removed. perhaps it's a disincentive not to keep hundreds of titles in my list and to reward the binge watchers that keep word of mouth going.

  5. Anybody else all of a sudden having an issue where one cannot add a movie to their streaming queue?!? I click to add, it shows a check mark, but when I check later on the movie has not been added. I've tried on multiple browsers too and same thing. Is there a limit to how many TV/movies one can add to queue? Another issue is when I want to click 'remind me' when an upcoming show/movie is being added to Netflix, when I check it is says 'ERROR' on it. This all started up on 2/7/22

    1. I know there is a limit of 500 for discs, so I think it's safe to assume there is a limit on My List as well.

      Delete
    2. Huh, well that sucks! In today's high tech world seems so bizarre for a company to have random cut off points like that. I will watch a few movies in my streaming queue and then see if I can add a movie to check out that thesis. If I still got an issue I will try to open a ticket with Netflix customer support (ugh)

      Delete
    3. I doubled checked and this is what I found:

      About My List

My List is automatically ordered to bring the most relevant titles to the front. Some considerations:

If you added the title to My List recently.

If a new season of a show in My List becomes available.

If a title will expire soon and no longer be available.
      Note:
      Manual ordering is not available.

You can add up to 500 TV shows and movies on a profile.

Titles stay in My List until you delete them or if:

The title is no longer available on Netflix.

You travel to a region where a title isn't available. When you return, or if the title becomes available in your current region, it will appear in My List again.

    4. Thanks Sarah, that's helpful information.

    5. Thanks Sarah! Good info, I just counted my streaming queue and I tabulated 523 total. Maybe I messed up, but either way it's close to that 500 cap. Just not enough hours in day to watch all that I want to watch LOL! And now that all the Netflix produced Marvel shows are leaving this month I got to watch all of them :-))

    6. a week ago my one expiring movie that i cared about was nowhere near the front of my list, so i don't buy that.

the expiring FX network series also were not expiring then, if there was any doubt; although now i wonder about the expiring netflix "original" MCU series that i saw near there.

500 was the old limit, back when my list was numbered and called a watch instantly or instant queue, and that mirrored the dvd limit. according to my usual person at the dvd division, just like the dvd queue, my list buckles the more titles you have associated with it, which i think assumes the invisible titles that are no longer streaming but may return automatically, like the new writeup above says. that technical challenge with too many titles was the reason given to me yesterday for why manual order was removed.

i haven't checked yet myself, but does anyone have any info on where the MA-rated MCU shows will go? i'm assuming hulu because disney puts MA content there instead of disney+. i honestly thought this would take a lot longer and don't appreciate the way this is going down, but what else is new?

      Delete
    7. Travis I agree the Netflix auto ordering is extremely hit or miss. Even back when one was able to manually order streaming queue it was so very glitchy. I don't know where MCU will end up, but I would put 50/50 odds on Disney/Hulu

      Delete
    8. i had a chance to check twitter for info, and people are saying disney+, but i don't buy that either. disney has been particular about its branding, putting its less family-friendly content, including all of FX, on hulu. there's no MA content on d+. netflix will likely end up one of the notable places not to watch these "original" shows because they have been available for purchase for years from retailers like amazon. anyway, pulling all its content with 2 1/2 weeks' notice is a power move, sure, if you root for disney and against netflix, but as a customer without either of its services i consider it another kind of move.

  7. As I may have mentioned here before, after I retired a few years ago, I had a project to watch every Best Picture Oscar winner. Between Netflix DVDs, Netflix streaming, a few other streaming services such as HBO that I have access to, and library DVDs, I finished it not long after "Parasite" was announced as the 2019 winner just over two years ago. When "Nomadland" won last year, I watched it within 48 hours of the announcement on one of the streaming services that I have.

I hoped to do the same this year with "CODA", but it was only streaming on Apple TV+, one of the services I don't subscribe to (yet). Plus, I got the impression from something I read somewhere that Apple TV+ originals don't get released on home media or to other streaming services. I figured I would have to bit the bullet and subscribe to Apple TV+ just to be able to see it. I know it was in theaters but just for a short period of time, so I figured I had missed my opportunity to see it there.

The bad news is that when I took my first pandemic-era airplane trip last week, we were stuck on the runway for more than two hours awaiting take-off because of bad weather on our route. The good news is that American Airlines has Apple TV+ available for no extra charge, and I spent about two of the approximately six total hours I was on that plane watching "CODA". It was on my iPad mini's screen, but I was glad to get it any way I can.

  8. "dvd netflix" having every best picture winner foiled by a computer company. seems oddly fitting actually.

    1. It looks like the only one other than "CODA" that's missing from this page is the second-ever winner, "The Broadway Melody". However, some random clicks on ones I couldn't get from Netflix DVD reveal that availability is "unknown". ("Oliver!", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Amadeus")

      Delete

    2. Thanks for the update, Regina. For anyone looking to stream classic films, such as those you mention above, a good place to check is The Criterion Channel. None of them are available there now, but they get a new batch of films every month, and they don't always show up on sites like reelgood.com. Almost 10 years ago, I wanted to watch all of Marlene Dietrich's films. I couldn't find Shanghai Express anywhere. I thought maybe it was one of those films that doesn't exist anymore, but a year or so ago it showed up on Criterion. I watched immediately.

      Delete
    3. Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are available, so i'm not sure what you mean. i think the inability to rent CODA gave license to stop carrying others because i believe having all of those up to that point was a point of pride or something of a commitment.

as i stream movies elsewhere and try to rate them on netflix, i see how decimated the library has become, with even mainstream movies from this century now delisted.

  9. I thought NF had renewed "The Lucky One (2012)," since the NF smart TV app shows no expiration date. But it does show, "Last Day...April 30" on my laptop.

Is this yet another slice of "fresh hell" from Netflix, or just a one-time glitch?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm afraid it's the first one, not just a one-time glitch. Since Netflix started giving us 30 days notice for all titles, they've been through multiple versions of how to display the last-day notice on the smart tv app.

The current version doesn't show the last-day notice until you actually play the movie (or show). It's at the top left of the screen - but only for a moment, and only once a day. This doesn't make any sense to me. I guess the solution is to check the info page on the website, but if it's a series, that can be deceiving, too, since sometimes the only place it shows is when you play an episode.

Sometimes I think Netflix employees (especially the IT people) don't ever actually watch anything on the service. Otherwise they would see how unhelpful it can be.

      Delete
    2. i'm not one to defend netflix, and like over 200k subscribers did last quarter, i plan to cancel next week, but as bad as the user interface (UI) is, the availability hasn't gone away on my depreciated app since the 30 days' notice last year. as i posted about then, there was a brief time when i could scroll through My List and every expiration would show, which i still believe is the intent. soon thereafter, changes were introduced making me have to check the details section for every title for any such date. that's why i only did it once a month usually.

short version: try the title info menu on the app without pressing play. i imagine at least some apps still have the data.

      Delete
    3. Just wanted to add I also can see the notice on the detail page without having to play the movie. Also, for some bizarre reason, the notice also shows after the end-credits. I have no idea why you would need to see the notice after you've already watched the movie, but Netflix does what Netflix does, I guess.

Even though we don't know for sure Gotham will be leaving at the end of September, this gives anyone who wants to watch all 99 episodes more time to do so, just in case. This was the right page to post this on, but I'm going to put a quick pointer on the Home page to make sure everyone gets the message.

Would it be possible to include the designation “Netflix Original” next to those expiring titles that fit into that category?

    1. Hi Wellesley72 - nice to hear from you. Sorry for the delayed reply, but I had to think about your request. I guess I'm wondering how helpful this would be (and why), and how good I would be at determining which titles should be so-labeled. It seems like there are at least two categories that would fit - Netflix-produced and owned titles, and those that Netflix has some interest in, but do not own outright. There seems to be an increasing number of these titles, but they don't expire as regularly as non-Netflix Originals, so I'm not sure how many titles we'd be talking about.

I'd be interested to hear how many of you would like to have these titles so-designated on the list. It's possible, of course, but to be honest, it already takes a lot of time to check everything, and I don't relish the idea of one more thing to consider.

Perhaps those who care about this could label such titles when they contribute them, but I wouldn't expect everyone to have to do this. We're all contributing our time, here, and I would want our efforts to be worth that time to the majority of readers.

Everyone, please reply with any thoughts you have about this idea, and how helpful you would find it. Thanks.

    2. i haven't checked the homepage since i canceled in april, so if that discounts my opinion for anyone, i expect you'll stop reading now.

this request reminds me of the one about listing the language as well. i think people forget you are volunteering to do this and the same people wouldn't ask a helpful neighbor or good samaritan to do even more for them in person, especially when they can do it for themselves. this information is just as readily available to them as it would be to you to do for them.

that netflix expires and removes its own content has long been a curiosity for me. i've looked for and wished there were a really good list of all such titles that have come and gone. so-called complete lists aren't and tend to start artificially in the last 5 years rather than from the beginning. then there is the netflix company red envelope that one would think would distribute its content to the service, but many titles never made it (even when available to buy or rent elsewhere).

as you say, part of the confusion comes from the nature of ownership. as we know better than most, much of it was never owned by netflix and always some sort of distribution deal. again, i haven't been on since april, but netflix had long ceased using the terminology "original" and instead slapped an "N" on titles to give that impression. thus you can't really say they are netflix originals, the tricky dicks.

    3. Always good to hear from you, Travis. Thanks for checking in, even though you've checked out of Netflix. Your comments are right on.

I was the one who suggested adding language—necessarily information for me because I have to watch subtitles on a different device than the tv I use to stream English language films or shows. I added language information when I submitted an expiration, but I was the only one to do so, so I expect that this information wasn’t of much use to anyone else. (I haven’t made a submission for quite some time now, because MyList is now down to only 15 titles—mostly series—and if one of them is expiring someone beats me to the post. When my MyList drops much lower, I’ll join Travis in dropping Netflix streaming, but I will keep the DVD service as there are many titles there that are not easily available on any streaming service).

The same is true for Netflix Originals. Those for whom this matters can add a note to their submissions, but there probably won’t be too many who care about this information. Also, if Netflix has lost the rights to an “Original “ the rightsholder will almost certainly stream the product elsewhere if the there’s enough interest to make money off of it.

    5. Thanks for weighing in, ChapelHillNC. Your comments are also right on. I wish I could accomodate everyone's particular need or interest, but I'm struggling to keep up as it is.

Wellesley72, I'm sorry, but I won't be able to add the feature you suggest.
For everyone, please remember that every title on our list is linked to its Netflix info page, where you can find details about the movie/series.

    6. good to hear from you, ChapelHillNC, and thanks for filling in the details about the language. it's interesting to know what the original language is in as far as deciding whether to watch, but i see how your setup makes that detail more pressing. i like your solution of providing other information in submitting titles for those who want to know.

(trivia time: the first tv series to premiere on netflix, bad samaritans, was unceremoniously removed, is never acknowledged, and didn't move to some other streaming home. apparently it's quite bad. fox produced it.)

    7. New note for Wellesley72: I've been thinking a little more about your request. One thing I could do would be to put a red "N" in parentheses after the Netflix title for any movie/series that has the big red N on the poster. For example, the series Bangkok Love Stories: Hey You! was just added to the list today. It has the big red N on the poster. I could list it as:
      2/6
Bangkok Love Stories: Hey You! (N) - 1 Season (2018) [Can't do red in comments.]

I wouldn't be able to distinguish between levels of Netflix interest, but would this meet your needs? Let me know.

  14. Once every 10 years starting in 1952, Sight and Sound, the film journal of the British Film Institute, conducts an extensive poll of film professionals of the 10 greatest films of all time. Since 1992, film directors have been split off in a separate poll. The results of the 2022 poll were released on the first of December. 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics were included in the critics poll and 480 film makers were included in the directors poll. The results of the poll have been released in two top 100 lists (the directors list actually includes 104 films due to ties for last place) and are available on BFIs website.
The idea of “greatest films of all time” is inherently very subjective. From what I have read, Sight and Sound leaves the interpretation of the term up to the individual poll respondents. As a result, a broad cross section of films are represented in the two lists.

Over time, four films have topped the critics poll, Bicycle Thieves in 1952; Citizen Kane 1962 to 2002; Vertigo 2012 (Kane move to second place); Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles 2022 (Vertigo moved to second and Kane to third).

Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles was directed by Chantal Akerman and released in 1975. While Jeanne Dielman is an outstanding film, it does not make my personal top 10. However, I do easily understand why it made the top of the list. It was a completely new approach to film making, as much a departure from previous films as Kane was in it day. Delphine Seyrig’s performance in the title role is excellent. For anyone interested in viewing this film, be aware that it is very challenging. It is long, 201 minutes, and slow paced. For those willing to make a serious effort it is well worth it.

Carol, I see that you occasionally mention The Criterion Channel which I still believe is the best streaming service for serious film buffs. Criterion currently has streaming two collections of these films. The Critics collection currently contains 56 films (including Jeanne Dielman) from the critics poll (note-- Pierrot le fou is expiring on 12/31) and the Directors collection contains 62 films.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to let our readers know about the availability of these classics, Achernar. I'll put a note on the main page, so everyone knows this is here.

    2. This is the quote I was looking for previously. It defines “greatest” better than I could. From BFI’s website “The voters were asked to interpret ‘Greatest’ as they chose: to reflect the film’s importance in cinematic history, its aesthetic achievement, or perhaps its personal impact in their own life and their view of cinema.”

    4. Thanks - I'm looking forward to watching it. You've given me an idea - I'm going to make a list of this year's Oscar nominees that are streaming, and where to find them. I'll try to do that in the nexr few days.
