  1. Loving this month after May's slaughter. My queue of older titles of merit (pre-2013) shot down from about 95 to well under 40.

Netflix still trumps anybody else if you're into well-reviewed indie, art-house and documentaries from the last few years (between them and the smaller crop on Amazon Prime, practically everything ends up on these two services).

But if you want anything older, you're basically now out of luck. A good option in the future will be Filmstruck which is a service from Turner Classic Movies and the Criterion Collection (which will soon be leaving Hulu).

    1. I didn't know that Criterion was leaving Hulu. 95% of my Hulu queue is Criterion.

    2. "The Criterion offering on Hulu will still be available into the month of November, but after that, FilmStruck and the Criterion Channel will be our exclusive streaming home."

From a blog post on the Criterion site:

    3. Thanks for the link. Fimstruck sounds interesting, but it depends on the price structure and if an app is made available for my TV. I am hesitant to plunk down cash for a new device just to add one new service. In any case, Hulu is gone after November.

  2. "Netflix still trumps anybody else if you're into well-reviewed indie, art-house and documentaries" Nope....Tribeca Shortlist easily beats it and I imagine Criterion's FilmStruck will too when it launches in the fall.

  3. Are we not going to be able to see the 6/30 movies till the end of the month now because of Netflix removing expiration dates on the dvd side.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Some of our contributors have various devices that allow them to see 2 weeks in advance instead of the single week that Netflix puts on the streaming site. We should start getting titles for 6/30 in the middle of the month, about June 17.

  4. I do to but I forget to check that. I love getting advance notice on things expiring as I am very busy and want to make sure I have time to watch everything on my list that is expiring.

  5. If you have taken a look at The Refreshment Stand page (link at top of sidebar), I owe you mea culpas. Further research has changed the Miramax numbers substantially. I have updated the chart, now, and some of my comments in the body of the page, as well.

Just wanted to make sure that anyone interested knew there were corrections to that page since midnight.

    2. Ok thanks! I didn't even know they published expiring titles.

    3. They put out a release around the 20th of every month with a smattering of titles, nothing like what you'll find here.

  7. I'm beginning to think that it might be easier for you just to list the titles that aren't expiring! (Sarcasm warning) PHOOEY! Disclaimer: I have weird taste, perhaps, but I have yet to really like any of the "original series", on Netflix or Amazon for that matter.

  8. While I am lamenting the possible expiration of the Ken Burns documentaries on 6/30 (I'm still somewhat optimistic that they will be renewed), at least it's nice to know that things are worse at Amazon Prime. With the exception of about a half dozen recent "exclusives", like Indian Summer, The Crimson Field and Arthur & George, as far as I can tell all other PBS content is set to expire at the end of 6/14. Those of us who also have Prime have been waiting patiently for a contract to be renewed, but so far no word. Prime is also scheduled to lose the X-Files and a couple of other Fox series that same day. Most of the CBS series expiring on Netflix on June 30 (like Flashpoint and Medium) will still be on Prime after that date.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm still somewhat optimistic that they will be renewed.

I use to think like that now I am no longer shocked when anything "non original" expires. Yes I am annoyed and even go as far sometimes to buy the movie or TV show on disc but no longer surprised.

  10. I'm really annoyed right now!! I just discovered NETFLIX removed from my list "Lo que la vida me robó" One of the best Tele-novellas I've seen on Netflix. And I'm in the middle of "Para Vovar Amar" that they are removing on June 30th, which means If I don't marathon this show I won't know how it ended. Why is NETFLIX removing content?? What is the reason for this?? I've been telling my friend from Spain who's visiting next month that I have some great Novellas to watch with her, only to discover that NETFLIX are removing them. Why are they removing shows?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'm sorry Netflix has taken/will take favorite shows off before you can finish them, or before you can watch with your friend. Netflix regularly cycles shows off/brings new shows on, but it's hard when something you love leaves too soon. Overall, content is going down, while Netflix frees up resources for original content (none of which appears to be a novela-type show).

Hopefully, you can find something else you and your friend will enjoy - there looks to be a number of Spanish language series available on Netflix, but I don't know which are the best, except for Grand Hotel, which I became instantly addicted to, and binge-watched to the exclusion of everything else in my life.

As for the series you mention, Lo que la vida me robó is available on Hulu, with subscription. There are no subtitles, but for those who speak Spanish, that would be an option. Hulu offers 1 free week, $7.99 per month after that (with other options for a little more). With only a quick search, I didn't find Para volver a amar streaming, but the dvd is available from Amazon.com for about $10.

Before spending money, though, check to see if the dvds are available at your local library. Mine has both series. Hope you're able to find something you and your friend will enjoy together, Unknown, in spite of the disappointment with Netflix.

  11. According to a post by will g on What's On Prime Now, a number of the expired Miramax films have found their way onto Prime. Unfortunately, Prime does such a lousy job promoting more than a small number of films on their web site that you need either check new Prime releases on Instantwatcher or do a title-by-title search on Prime for Miramax content. In the meantime, when is the "refresh" of Miramax films on Netflix going to occur?

  13. Is Central Park 5 (PBS, 2012) expiring on June 30? What are the chances of renewals of the Ken Burns documentaries (also now scheduled to leave Amazon Prime on 6/30?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have no guess about renewal, but I now have access to a device that shows 2 weeks notice for expirations, and I intend to check all PBS shows shortly after midnight, when the notice for 6/30 will go up. Stay tuned.

      Delete
  14. Today's update is complete. June 30 now has 4 lists, which I hope is more helpful, not more hassle. I tried to divide things by investment of time required, as well as logical categories.

There might be more PBS shows. I found these using a "PBS" search, but I know not everything gets listed. I'll be trolling for more of these, plus more movies. It's not as easy as using the dvd site was. Thanks to all of you who contribute these harder-to-find titles.

    2. Hi Seth and Brian, It looks like Legends of Oz got renewed. The "available until" notice was on the NF info page, and also showed on My List early yesterday, but now it's gone. The title is also gone from uNoGS. Good catch - thanks.

    1. Per instantwatcher.com:
First Contact (Picard, not Kirk) came on June 1. That one isn't leaving (yet).

Original, II, & III have only been on since March 1. V since Feb. 1, the rest since Jan. 1. So, yeah, they pretty much all just came on.

  22. Everyone: I'm having a problem with Blogger- when I update post pages, Blogger is creating duplicate pages, only without the comments previously made. This page (Home) is okay, but the previous Post that holds the May and June expired titles is one of the duplicates - no comments, and doesn't have the most recently expired titles (June 22 and 23). I'm working on fixing this. If you see anything that looks strange, feel free to leave a comment. Even if the page goes away, all comments end up in my email. Thanks.

  28. Flashpoint, Medium, and Numbers, as well as The Ghost Whisperer, are all streaming on Amazon Prime. MacGuyver is not.

In addition to the PBS content expiring on Netflix on June 30, almost all PBS content (except for a few very recent series) is also expiring on Prime on June 30. The expiration since on Prime follow a brief respite after the PBS content was originally supposed to expire on June 14. I believe many of the PBS children's shows also expire on Hulu on June 30 as well. (I don't know what adult PBS content is on Hulu or if such content also expires on June 30. PBS has previously gone right to the expiration date before renewing content on both Netflix and Prime so it will be interesting to see what happens. What Carol is showing as expiring is almost all of the PBS content on Netflix. The amount of PBS content on Prime is much greater--I would guess between 10 and 15% of its TV catalogue. While PBS does stream some content on its own web site, it is mostly very new material which generally doesn't stay there long. One big exception is Downton Abbey; I believe all episodes of all seasons are streaming on PBS.org for at least a year. The same is true of Indian Summer, Poldark, Grantchester and The Crimson Field, all of which are allegedly Prime "exclusives" (and are not expiring tomorrow).

    1. While the number of PBS shows expiring is discouraging, there are at least that many others that will still be streaming after today, from all categories. So we're not going to be left completely PBS-less. All of the shows on the list DO still show as expiring, but I'm keeping my eye on them to see if we get at least some back.

I haven't updated the list yet, so it won't show as renewed until I do the update later this morning.

  30. There is something going on with the uNoGS and New on Netflix USA sites. There are three titles we have found that should be on those sites, but aren't (Thale, Age of Dinosaurs, and Brick Mansions). There haven't been any new titles added on either site for a couple of days, which is unusual. It makes me wonder what other expiring titles might be out there that we don't know about. I have email out to both sites, and will keep you posted.

    2. Indeed it was 7/13. Must have gotten confused due to a last minute effort to stream Vicious before it expired.

    Alone with Her (2006)

Above is from uNoGS, which has been updated. The site administrator said there was a problem with the capture (getting the new expiring titles from the NF site). Hopefully, that won't happen again.
