FAQ: Expiration Dates on Netflix

Please Note: The information on this page is now outdated. I will try to update it with the currently correct way to find expiration dates on Netflix as soon as I can - but it might take awhile. In the meantime, here is the easiest way to check the titles on your My List if you have a smart TV or Roku/similar device:

1) When you sign on to NF, the Home page will open.
2) Move your curser to the left so that it is no longer on a poster, and you see the list of options:
Search
Home
New & Popular
TV Shows
Movies
My List
3) Arrow down and click on My List. This will open your entire My List so that all titles are visible by arrowing down/across each row.
4) As your curser lands on each poster, the details (title, year, length, etc.) for each title appear above it. It is not necessary to click on the poster.
5) If the title is expiring in the next 30 days, there will be a "Last Day to Watch" notice directly below the line with the year and length. The notice is in bold type, so it's easy to see.
6) If there isn't any notice, that means the title is not expiring within 30 days. Unless it's a series with only some seasons expiring. To discover those, you have to click on play for one episode of each season, and watch for an expiration notice at the top-left of the screen as the episode begins.

4) Where do I look on Netflix for the expiration date of a movie or TV show?

Shorthand answer, for those accustomed to navigating Netflix:

1. Go to the information page for the movie/show.
2. Click on "Details," at the bottom of the page.
3. Click on the far right arrow on the "Details" page.
4. If there is an expiration date, it will be at the far right of the second "Details" page, indicated by the word, "Availability."

Step-by-step answer, for those newer to Netflix:

1. Search for the movie you are interested in.
2. When the graphic for the movie appears, hover your cursor over it. A small info window will come up.
3. Click on the down-pointing arrow at the bottom of the window. The movie's info page will open.
4. At the bottom edge of the info page, click on the word, "Details."
5. Finally, click on the right-pointing arrow at the far right of the "Details" page.
6. At the far right of the second "Details" page, you will see the word, "Availability," and then an "Until" date.
7. If there is no such information, that means the movie is not expiring in the next week - usually; sometimes titles do expire without notice, but not often. (TV shows will give you a month's notice.)

5) How can I see on Netflix if any of My List titles are going to expire?

Please Note: If you would prefer to have your "My List" ordered according to what Netflix suggests for you, you will not be able to see a text-only list that indicates "Until" dates.

Shorthand answer:
1. Go into "Your Account."
2. Go to "My Profile," and select "Order in My List."
3. When the new page opens, make sure the option for "Manual Ordering" is checked. Click "Save."
4. Then, when you go to "My List," you should see a text list of titles you have indicated you want to watch.
5. Any expiring titles will have the "Available until" date in the fifth column to the right of the title (after the length of the movie or show).

Step-by-step answer:
1. On the drop-down menu below your name on the toolbar, select "Your Account."
2. On the "Your Account" page, go to "My Profile."
3. Under "My Profile," select "Order in My List." A new page will open.
4. Check "Manual Ordering," and then click the "Save" button.
5. You will see a message that says "Your preferences have been updated."
6. From the Browse menu in the toolbar, choose "My List." You should see a text listing of the titles you have chosen to be on that list.
7. As you scroll down the list, any expiring titles will have the "Available until" date in the fifth column (to the right of the title, after the length of the movie or show).
8. If you don't see any "Available until" dates, you might want to test it by putting a title you know is expiring on your "My List." Choose one from our list that expires within the next few days.

    1. Hi Unknown - Do you mean because of the 48-title truncation problem? I don't want to make changes based on that until I'm sure about what's going to happen. I think the truncation problem is discussed enough on other pages that people are in the know about it.

If there are other updates, please be specific. As far as I can see, these instructions are still correct, except that My List no longer has stars. That isn't significant enough for me to take the time to make a new graphic, because the purpose of the graphic doesn't have anything to do with the stars.

  2. The Netflix website has been updated, so a lot of the things you said to click on don't exist anymore.
I copied "Order in My List" and pasted it into Google search bar and found what I was looking for.

    1. Thanks Anonymous. I'm kind of on overload these days, but when I get a chance, I'll review this page and make corrections.

  3. Did this feature dissappear on my list I had it two weeks ago but now it's gone the Available Until date. I've had it for years!

  4. I just called Netflix about this. They said they are doing an update to the website and the "Available Until" dates will be back when they are done with the update. I work in software development and it seems like the only viable reason for this situation is someone released an update a couple months ago that killed it by accident and now they are trying to get it back with the latest update. But regardless, the dates should be coming back.

    1. Thanks Anonymous. I kind of thought the available until dates might be coming back to My List, and that is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to be in a big hurry to update all the pages on the blog that need updating due to the new full-month's notice/last day to watch notices on Netflix. I hope the availability dates come back to My List sooner rather than later.

  5. It would be great if they developed a Netflix code to bring up all of the things in your list that are about to expire/be removed in the next 30 days

    1. It would indeed! I'm hoping they restore the expiration dates to the manual My List page. I don't understand why they took them off.

  6. Wow I don't see expiration date on posters on My List anymore on Roku only if you click through to the movie this is horrible!

    1. Yeah, it's been that way for a while, now. The other way was so much more logical, easier, faster. Understanding why Netflix does what they do is horribly frustrating.

  7. Is there any way other than clicking on every title left?

    1. Not that any of us has found. Whatever app you're using, Netflix makes you open the page for the film/series to let you see the one detail you're looking for. It's probably easier to just check our list. Even though we have everything that's leaving, not just the titles on your list, you can scan through it quickly to see if any of your stuff appears.
