  1. Also added to the list this morning:

    1/14/16
    Woman Thou Art Loosed (2004)

    1/20/16
    Chariots of the Gods (1970)

Chariots of the Gods is also an Oscar nominee - for Best Documentary. That was the only category I didn't check before (of course). So now I have checked all the Oscar nominated Docs (except The Farm: Life in Angola Prison, because I couldn't find it on the DVD side), and Chariots was the only one expiring. So everything still in black on our Best Pictures Oscars page looks to be safe, at least through January 20.

    1. WOW, "Chariots of the Gods" was nominated for an Oscar?? Erich von Däniken, on whose book that was based, is a notorious fraud and crackpot, look him up on Wikipedia. Thanks for that alarming factoid Carol!

    2. I know, right? My only guess is that it was because the Academy voters are filmmakers rather than scientists or historians, and Hollywood isn't generally known for doing its homework. :p

  2. I sincerely hope for renewal and I think they have been before but...

    1. Yeah, NF seems to have a habit of letting Doctor Who get down to the wire before they renew the contract. I could swear they've done this at least twice before.

    2. Secrets and Lies is also streaming on Amazon Prime, which does not (yet) show an expiration date.

  4. There are rumors that Netflix will begin streaming in the near future in India and Russia. I am confident that Man on Wire and Rain Man will be replaced by equally excellent content from those two countries. Plus I look forward to watching that great Russian TV series, Dr. Whosky.

  6. They added a new feature on the Netflix phone app where it now gives a little pop-up saying that the movie/show you're watching will expire on x date. The pop-up only comes up for movies/shows that Netflix shows are expiring on their site, but still a nice little feature.

    ReplyDelete

    1. When does the pop-up show up? When you are watching the movie?

    2. When you start playing it, it pops up then.

  7. Are all expiring titles being posted in the comments? Because today I saw 'The Doors' and 'Varsity Blues' as expiring in my list, and they're in the list here, but I'd never noticed them in the comments.

    1. Hi Anonymous, yes, all titles are posted in comments. As I'm sure you've noticed, I often post my comment AFTER adding titles to the list. This happens because I find the titles late in the day (often after midnight). I double-checked in my email folder of all comments, and I did post the two titles you're asking about. There are a couple of reasons you might not have noticed them:
      > They were posted on Christmas morning, when people often have a lot going on.
      > There were 19 titles on 9 different days in the comment, so it would have been easy to overlook a couple.

My practice is to leave titles-only comments up for at least 4 days. After that, I delete them so the scroll to the bottom doesn't get too long.

I'm sorry this happened, but glad you caught them now.

  8. Mardaani and Broken show up as expiring on Instant Watch Browser for Netflix on my Roku because they are in My Queue. Oddly, no movies or TV programs show up as expiring under Expiring Soon: Movies or Expiring Soon: TV.

  9. Any word on a Doctor Who and/or Classic Doctor Who renewal? Netflix is still showing 2/1 [1/31 to us] expiration dates.

  10. Thank you Carol. I am not surprised there is nothing about Doctor Who. All Netflix news is about Making a Murder this and the renewal of the dread Jessica Jones. If Doctor Who expires then the only place that will have it exclusive is Hulu.

  11. There are a number of TV series, many of which are owned or produced by CBS, which expire on Amazon Prime on February 14. See whatsonprime.blogspot.com under the comments in the heading "Expiring Soon". Some of these titles are also showing on Netflix, although I haven't seen anything (yet) indicating the titles may also expire from Netflix. Since so many of the titles are from CBS, Amazon may be in discussions with CBS to renew expiring licenses, or the titles may be so old that Amazon isn't interested in keeping them, or CBS may be transferring some of these titles to its own streaming service, CBSAllAccess or to Hulu. I would prefer Doctor Who to any or all of these titles, with the possible exceptions of Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone, both of which are streaming on Netflix with (as yet) no expiration date.

  12. Last day 1/29:
Wagner & Me 2010 NR Netflix Average of 22725 ratings: 3.8 stars (Actor and writer Stephen Fry explores a personal paradox: he's Jewish, but adores the music of Richard Wagner, Hitler's favorite composer. Fry meets Wagner's descendants, plays his piano and visits key places in Wagner's life in a quest for answers.)

  13. For those of you who read What's on Netflix (whatsonnetflix.com), there is an inaccurate article posted on their web site stating that Variety, a Hollywood trade publication, has reported that Doctor Who, Classic Doctor Who and certain other BBC titles are being renewed as of February 1. Unfortunately, the Variety article is from January 2015, when these BBC shows were last up for renewal, not 2016! The article mentions several shows expiring on February 1, such as Red Dwarf and MI-5, which actually expired on February 1, 2015. They also mention other shows as being renewed, such as Luther and The Office, which have never shown a. 2016 expiration date.

Just as I started to think I would not have to watch 8 series of Doctor Who by January 1, my hopes have been dashed by shoddy reporting! AARGH!

  14. The correct reference to What's on Netflix is www.whats-on-netflix.com. I have sent them a message saying I believe they have their facts wrong. Will let you know if I get a response.

    1. It's still possible for more notices to pop-up on the 25th (26th?). NF posts most of the notices on the site only a week in advance.

  18. Still nothing on Doctor Who unless all you want to hear about is Chelsea Handler and what to watch with the Blizzard. That makes no sense since many people will lose power and "hello" Internet service so it is kind of mute.

    2. Tony - I believe Seth is right. We almost always get a month's notice when a TV series is scheduled to expire. There has been no notice for the original Pokemon, so you have at least a month to watch as much as you want. Hopefully, it will be on even longer.

  22. So much for a routine renewal...I can't believe Netflix would have included Dr. Who if it expected to keep it.

  24. Extremist has updated its earlier article to state that Dr. Who will be expiring after 1/31 and there appear to be boo plans to renew it. If it is also expiring from Hulu, maybe there is a bidding war for exclusivity although the BBC has generally kept away from that. I believe that Amazon wanted exclusivity several years ago but the BBC wouldn't give it. As a result, there are very few BBC titles on Amazon other than Orphan Black, The Hours (which is losing Season 1 and content to which PBS holds the streaming rights.

I was at my local library yesterday and saw that they have Series 1-8 on DVD. Tony, you might check to see if your library has the series.

    1. There's talk on Facebook that the BBC is starting their own streaming service. That might be why Doctor Who is expiring everywhere.

      Delete
    2. I am sick of these new streaming services. Pretty soon every network is going to have there own streaming service with "exclusive" content that after you add up the cost of all the subscriptions you will be paying as much as having cable TV.

    3. Netflix confirmed on Facebook that Doctor Who is definitely leaving streaming after this month.

    1. The expiring movie Hush (2012) is listed on Rotten Tomatoes under the original Finnish title "Ja saapuu oikea yo". I had to Google the title to find it since there are no reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ja_saapuu_oikea_yo/reviews/

    2. Thanks, Jordan - good detective work. I still didn't see any info on RT. IMDb has a little more, including one user review:

    A Word from Warm Heart - 1 Season (2014)

Also, I'm no longer seeing an "Available until" notice for:
The Pyramid Code (2009) - 5 Episodes, on the list above as a last-day-to-watch of Feb. 6. I'm going to mark it as Renewed.

    1. Dear Netflix, The Pyramid Code does not make up for Doctor Who.

  28. There does not appear to be the kind of outrage that manifested itself last January when Doctor Who and a lot of other BBC content were set to expire. Maybe we have all become more fatalistic about the content on Netflix which I believe (despite its originals) has really gone downhill in the last six months, particularly in the movie department. Where are all the great new movies that were going to replace the Epix catalogue.

    3. For anyone who might not know, the movies Seth lists are all coming to Netflix on Feb. 1.

Seth, I have copied this comment to the Discussions page, so it will be with other comments about the quality of content on Netflix.

  29. Another addition, with my apologies:

    2/1
    Pokemon: Indigo League - Season 2 (2000)

I previously said that Indigo League looked safe for at least another month, but Netflix did one of their sneaky things, where they don't give the usual month's notice if not all seasons are expiring. Their press release indicates Season 2 of Indigo League will be gone after Feb. 1st. Season 1 should still be streaming.

I'm sorry for this misunderstanding, and for giving what has turned out to be incorrect information. There is some good news for Pokemon fans: Pokemon XY Season 1 and the 2014 movie, Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction will be coming to Netflix on Feb. 1.

  30. Expiring on Crackle (yes I actually do watch that service on occasion despite the many commercials)
Why We fight (2005) a film examining the Military Industrial Complex and the Iraq war
Expiration date is listed as 2/1, but I don't know if they mean 1/31 like Netflix or really mean 2/1.

    1. Thanks, Achernar. I think it's like Netflix. When I hover my cursor over the movie, the description says "3 Days Left," which would be today, tomorrow, and Sunday, the 31st.
