Expired Titles: December 2015

This page will no longer be updated. It now serves as the archive for titles that expired in December 2015. Note that the title of this post has been changed from Current Expiring Titles to Expired Titles: December 2015.

For those who might wonder, the reason for making this monthly change is to archive titles monthly, along with relevant comments for that month, which also reduces the amount of scrolling readers have to do to get to the newest comments for the current month. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Dates are the last day to watch, so they will be one day earlier than the "Available Until" date given by Netflix.

  1. Exstreamist (exstreamist.com) claims that notwithstanding the expiration date of 12/25 (12/24 to us) shown by Netflix, The West Wing will not be removed by Netflix. Exstreamist claims to have a confirmation from Netflix on this. I have no idea how reliable they are.

    1. Thanks, Wellesley72. I read the exstreamist article, and didn't feel as comfy as they said I should. I'll write a brief explanation, and put it at the top of the page for the Nov. 28 update. For those who would like to read what exstreamist had to say, the article is at:

    2. Thank you for your explanation on this. I pray that Extremeast is right as The West Wing is my favorite show of all-time. I know that last December, people said there was no way they would let Desperate Housewives expire, but they did and it has never come back, so I too am skeptical here. I will be worried sick waiting on this. Merry Christmas in deed.

    3. Thanks for writing, Ed. The one thing I'm holding on to is that the author of the exstreamist article would look like a huge, incompetent jerk if it turns out he's wrong. Would he really risk that if he wasn't totally sure? I'm hoping he knows more than he's saying, but was sworn to secrecy. Dear Santa, please let that be true. We've all been very good. Well, mostly.

  2. From New on Netflix:

    12/30
    Dino Squad - Seasons 1-2 (2007-2008)

After what happened with The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Ultimate Spider-Man, where Season 1 expired recently, and Season 2 is scheduled to expire soon, I'm wondering if this animated kids' show might follow the same pattern. If yes, then Season 1 might expire earlier than 12/30. Something to consider.

  3. Has there been any news as to what might be expiring on the 31st this year? Every year there are always a lot of movies leaving on that date.

    1. Because Netflix uses an Available Until date, movies/shows that have a last day to watch of Dec. 31 are considered by them as a January first expiration, so will not be officially announced until later this month. I have no doubt, however, that our many alert followers will be starting to contribute end-of-the-month expirations soon. We'll also be looking out for any major contracts that might be expiring, which would cause all movies under that contract to leave. Keep checking back.

  4. Carol, I am posting this in case you want to flag it for others as a possible issue:
    Regarding "December 7 - The Four (2012)"
I have not been able to get this to play, I tried 3 times yesterday & 3 times today so far. I get "This title is not available to watch instantly. Please try another title.", then 'aip-703' appears in the bottom right corner of the box underneath the "OK" button.
Netflix customer service told me it was probably a 3D or parental control issue. I assured them it was neither. They then helpfully suggested that there were hundreds of other titles available and I should watch them and just try again repeatedly on this one before it expires.

    1. Two fairly long calls to NF Customer Service later: I jumped through all the hoops they gave me - disabling Chrome Extensions, clearing Netflix cookies (via an email they sent me), and unplugging/replugging my computer - Zip, Zero, Nada. Then the rep told me she couldn't report it as a problem because it wasn't on my viewing activity. I explained that was because I couldn't view it. It took about four rounds of that same exchange for her to get it. I could tell she was thinking I hadn't really tried to watch it. End result: she said the tech people were made aware of the problem, and that it was in their queue to fix. I asked for a ballpark ETA, but she couldn't give me one. I let her know there were people who would like to watch the movie before it expired. She was always polite, but I got the feeling that nobody there really cared. I will flag the film on the list, and keep watch to see if/when it gets resolved. Thanks, Eric, for calling this to our attention.

    2. Carol, you are a saint. I've pretty much given up on Netflix Customer Service. Everything I've carefully and patiently pointed out to them as problematic in their policies and the user experience they've made even worse. I may never understand how a company so rich can have such poor customer service. It must somehow be a secret to their success. I'm so thankful to have this blog and you and all of the contributors to help make up for Netflix's shortcomings and shady dealings.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for writing, Travis. The thing about Customer Service is that it isn't an income generator, so companies don't want to put any more money into it than they absolutely have to. It's seen as a necessary burden, and usually doesn't get much respect - such as really good training, keeping reps informed as to what's going on in the company, and current problems that customers might be calling about. Typically, the pay is lousy. So, in a way, you're right - NF's poor customer service IS one of the secrets to its success.

Like you, I'm glad I found people who willingly contribute their time and knowledge to help us all have a better streaming experience. So glad you're with us! (And apologies to all the lovely people for straying a bit from the topic of expiring titles.)

    1. luckly I have watched most of these expired movies that I wanted to watch that were on my list. hopefully no more good ones leave. why would treasure planet be leaving because Netflix is getting an exclusive Disney contract in January it thought.

    2. The quantity going away on 12/31 is not too bad so far. What gets me is that so many of them are high quality films. 10 percent more of my greatly shurnken queue is going away. It is only 12/6. I am sure that some more will be added to the list as the month progresses. 12/31 expirations will not even be listed on my TV until 12/18.

    1. Between the awful new "My List" web interface and the truly great movies that are expiring, Netflix seems determined to lose my business. I can hear Hulu calling my name.

    2. And to think that a lot of these titles only popped up on the service in October. That happened to be just after the end of the Epix deal, and I genuinely believe Netflix added them solely to sucker wavering subscribers like me into giving the service another chance. Well, fool me once, etc. etc. I'll be Netflix-free in 2016.

  10. why would dumbo be leaving is Netflix signed a contract with Disney. it would not make sense for it to leave then.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I understand your logic, Seth, but we don't know exactly what is in the Netflix-Disney contract. There are always exceptions, stipulations, etc. And even if Netflix could stream any Disney movie as long as the contract goes, they would also have the option not to. If a movie isn't streaming, more people might be inclined to sign up for DVD service so they could get it that way. That's just one possibility - only the Netflix big-wigs know the real answer to your question. I'll be adding some more Disney films that are going away. :- (

      Delete
    2. Just a minor point, Carol, but I don't think Netflix is doing anything to encourage new DVD subscribers, certainly not at the expense of streaming, which is the direction it thinks its future lies. The DVD side is still profitable to Netflix but they're not putting new money into that operation, thinking it's a dying concern. DVD profits are being used to pay for "original" streaming content.

But you're right about contract terms. Disney isn't going to give up everything to Netflix. It has a history of releasing its "classics" for a short term and then locking them up in its vault for five or more years so that, when rereleased they will seem "new" to another generation. It's probably time for Dumbo to go to sleep for a few years.

  18. I must say, as every day goes by I am starting to panic that "West Wing" really is going away on Christmas Eve, despite the assurances to the contrary by the Exstreamist blog. Anyone know how late any last minute renewals have previously occurred on the older TV series titles? Thanks.

    1. I believe there have been a few that were renewed the day before. But I'm a bit concerned as well.

  22. Thanks Tim and Nica. I keep thinking the titles are going to be slowing down, but I guess not! I had just finished today's update when I saw your lists. I did a search for History Channel, and there are even more, so I'll put everything up on tomorrow's update.

I checked Beverly Hills Cop II on the DVD side, and it showed up there - it won't show on the streaming side until sometime on the 25th.

    1. P.S. For anyone who might be wondering, the original Beverly Hills Cop looks to be safe, so far.
