There were several comments yesterday with new titles for the expiring list. If you missed them, they are still on the previous post (click "Older Post," below). All of those titles were added to the list this morning.

  2. wow a lot of movies are expiring on 5/31 and a few of them were on my list and I have not had that many movies expiring from my list in a while.

  3. This is disgusting. Seriously considering subscribing to Hulu instead.

    1. Hulu is probably only another few months to next year away from passing the amount of streaming movies in Netflix depending on continued pickups and drops as they have progressed so far. Don't get me wrong I like the shows Netflix is creating but I have and had netflix to watch movies. That is why I still have DVD so I can see the ones not streaming. At this rate I might get rid of streaming and just keep dvd. Then go get a hulu account

  4. Long time reader, first time commenter. Many of these 5/31 expirations are miramax/dimension titles. I can only see expirations 7 days in advance on my device but I suspect other titles like "reservoir dogs" and "trainspotting" may be going too. I wonder if Netflix will be renewing their contract or if perhaps miramax is taking their catalogue to another service?

      October 1, 2015

"Netflix inks long-term contract with Miramax streaming instant"

      http://tech.droidblogs.com/Netflix-inks-long-term-contract-with-Miramax-streaming-instant/

      It's described as a "multi-year agreement."

    2. The date in the middle of that article says May 16, 2011.

The WSJ article from 2011 says it's a five-year deal, which explains why it's up.

      http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703696704576223131420376772

I'm curious if Netflix is working to renew this, since they didn't announce it like they did with Epix, or if they got a horrible backlash from the Epix announcement and are keeping mum.

    3. Very observant Nica, I didn't see that. Why in the world is that article dated 10/1/15? It was the first result when I Googled Mirimax/Netflix.

    4. shouldn't movies like pulp fiction or sin city be expiring as well if Miramax movies are expiring too. why are so many movies expiring at once I have never seen this many movies expiring besides December.

      Delete
    5. Yes both those titles are expiring. Maybe when I have time I'll plug all the Mirimax titles from Wikipedia into DVD search for a complete list.

    6. so every single Miramax titles are expiring. why are so many movies expiring at the end of the month. I got at least 5 or 6 to watch on my list which I have not had that many to watch in a while. they need to quit taking away movies. I do not care for the original content as much.

    1. Apropos to Miramax titles, oddly, 'There Will Be Blood' (2007) became available again a couple of days ago, and 'The Debt' (2010) is not expiring.

      Delete
    2. It could be that the films listed on Wikipedia's Miramax page that are streaming but not showing expiration dates are not part of the Miramax deal. "Queen Margot" is a foreign film that was edited to make the running time shorter, so that license may be held by the original production company. "There Will Be Blood" (according to its Wiki page) is also distributed by Paramount Vantage. "The Debt" is also distributed by Focus Features. Heck, we know Netflix doesn't own the right to their own originals in some countries, so it makes sense that not every Miramax film is actually part of the Miramax deal. Still, using that list as a guide is probably our best bet at collecting the information well ahead of time so people can avoid last-minute nasty shocks.

      Delete
    3. Other films that aren't showing expiration dates:

Amelie, Chasing Amy, The English Patient, Frida, Good Will Hunting, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Kate and Leopold, Mansfield Park (1999), Rounders, Shakespeare in Love, Sling Blade, Swingers, and Trainspotting.

I'm also curious as to how Netflix will proceed. I know they've been trying to get newer titles and have more originals. But if people find out about the number of titles going away (let alone the quality in some of those titles), they might rethink subscribing. Particularly since rates just went up.

    4. Brian, most of the films you mention are on our list as expiring. Some I just checked yesterday. But you're right - they're not showing as expiring now. What the heck gives? Have they now been renewed? Were they marked as expiring by accident? Will all/most of the nearly 400 titles end up staying? That would be terrific, of course, but man, they so totally need a better system for this kind of stuff.

Stay tuned, everyone. I'll keep my eye on titles, and keep you all posted as to the status.

Thanks for your info and thoughts, Brian.

    5. I just rechecked the titles on my queue that were set to expire, and now The Aviator is no longer showing an expiration date.

    6. I just went through all the titles over the last three days on my blog and those were the titles that I found were safe. I dunno if all the titles listed will be expiring by May 31. I hope not. Netflix has worked to keep Scrubs and Sherlock streaming of late (yeah, I know Dr. Who is the exception) and perhaps they're working their magic again (hoping to see Boondocks on the safe docket soon as well). All I can think of is that maybe they're trying to save the A-list titles?

Nica, I can confirm that The Aviator has no expiration date. And neither is Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs now.

  6. Still not a word about the Mirimax Massacre anywhere on the internet but here, as far as I can see. Well I did find ONE tweet from a user with 21 followers

    https://twitter.com/chibinica/status/728415333074255877

but that's it. Nothing in the Reddit Netflix forum. So far, it's our exclusive.

I'm still kind of holding out hope for a renewal, but from my research it doesn't look good. Mirimax was just purchased two months ago by a company called beIN Media Group, based in Qatar and formerly affiliated with Al Jazeera. That's probably why the deal is expiring. They may want make their own deal with Netflix in the future, but they're letting the existing one expire.

We'll see how long it takes for the media to pick up on this. To me it's worse than when the Starz and Epix deals ended, and those were both big news stories.

  10. are there any additional 5/31 titles or is this all that you think we will have? when I chatted with someone at Netflix said that none of these Miramax titles are expiring and to not trust other websites like yours which are always right and you guys no stuff way far in advance than Netflix does. I wish we know why more titles were expiring this month compared to the last few months where I barely had anything from my list expiring. now I had a fair amount expiring from my list this month. I hope Netflix does not turn into just Netflix only content as I don't enjoy that stuff as much as the non original stuff.

    1. Seth, none of us knows right now exactly what's going on. We may find more titles that show as expiring on May 31. We may find more that now have the expiring notice removed. Maybe they'll all be renewed.

Here's one thing I do know: I don't trust a darn thing Netflix Customer Service ever says, because the higher-ups never tell them anything - that was told to me by one of the reps in a wee hours heart-to-heart conversation.

Please be patient, and hang in there with us all, Seth. I'll let you know anything new as soon as I find out, as I'm sure everyone else will, too.

    2. "when I chatted with someone at Netflix said that none of these Miramax titles are expiring and to not trust other websites like yours"

Unbelievable. I hope Seth pointed out to the rep that Netflix itself had posted the Mirimax expiration dates. How they could then say that none of them are expiring is beyond me.

My talk with a rep about it was similarly fruitless, but at least they didn't blatantly lie to me.

    Bruce Lee, The Legend (1977)

Also, the Netflix streaming site and DVD site have conflicting titles for the Armour of God/Operation Condor movies. It’s very confusing. What is currently on the list is: Operation Condor 2: Armour of the Gods (1986)

I have changed that title on the May 31 page according to what is on Netflix streaming, and added Operation Condor with the Netflix streaming title, as follows:

    Armour of God (1986)
Armour of God: Operation Condor (1991) (On IMDb, this one is Armour of God 2: Operation Condor)

The Legend of Drunken Master, as well as Bruce Lee, Legend have also been added to the May 31 page.

    1. Yes, it's incredibly confusing! The 1991 movie was dubbed and released in US theaters as Operation Condor in 1997 to cash in on Jackie Chan's popularity from Rumble in the Bronx. Then the 1986 movie was released on video in the US as Operation Condor 2.

    1. Never mind. Looks like The Boondocks is still expiring on the 23rd so I can still see a few expiration dates. But none of them are for the Miramax movies.

    2. Yep, expiration dates have disappeared on the DVD side. For second I thought it meant a Mirimax renewal, but it appears to just be a glitch.

    3. UNLESS they've just intentionally stopped posting the dates, God help us.

    4. Just talked to two customer reps, including a supervisor. Neither were even aware that DVD search showed expiration dates, so that was a complete waste of time as usual.

      Delete
    5. Ugh, I was worried that might be the case. One of the main reasons I even have DVDs is because I can see what expires a month in advance. I've already dropped down from 3 DVDs to 1 over the years. If I didn't have a ton of movies in my DVD list, I would just cancel and keep only streaming.

      Delete
    6. probably learned from epix and are hiding their hands, just a couple weeks late

      Delete
    7. I just searched every way I could think of on the DVD site. Can't find ANY expiration notices for anything - even those titles expiring in the next few days.

Expiration notices were up as late as this morning around 8:00 a.m., so this has happened since then. I can't see anything for The Boondocks, Jordan, so that must have happened after you looked.

When I look in my dvd queue, the info that pops up when I hover over movie titles doesn't even show that they are streaming! This is true for ALL movies, expiring or not. There IS a play button for the streaming movies - was that there before? I don't remember. The series (like The Boondocks) do show "streaming" on the pop-up info, and also have the play button. Seems inconsistent.

I'm hoping this is temporary, and that they are just in the process of updating. But I'm worried that they've decided to forego expiration notices on the dvd side, and we'll be stuck with only the 7 days.

For people who have devices and apps that give more than 7 days notice, have you seen any changes in that info today?

      Delete
    8. Okay, they're messing with stuff. Now the movie pop-up info DOES show "streaming," at least most of them. Fingers crossed the expiration notices will come back.

      Delete
    9. My phone app is showing the show expiration dates (a month in advance, just like the site), and my XBox 360 app is showing the movie expiration dates at least 14 days in advance, since it is showing the expiration for Black Hawk Down. The DVD side is not showing the expiration dates even for things I know are expiring, such as You Are Beautiful.

This may very well be the last straw for me. I don't particularly want to end Netflix, as I have many movies and shows on both my DVD and streaming lists, but I have been wanting to shift my focus back from streaming to the DVD side, since most of what I want to watch is only on DVD. However, there are also certain shows that Netlix just doesn't seem to want to get discs for. Still, the poor customer service and tricks they pull on their members has been bothering me more and more. I will focus my efforts on watching those things that are instant only and then shift my focus back to my DVD queue, using streaming as a fill-in between discs, for my own sanity.

    10. Sorry Carol, I should have been more specific. I'm on an iPhone 6 and using the Netflix app. That's where I saw The Boondocks' expiration date. The Miramax movie exp dates are too far away to appear on the app (usually about a week warning for movies and month for TV shows). Right now the exp dates go up to the 18th so we should find out in about two weeks if the Miramax movies are still expiring. In the meantime I'm going to keep watching all the potentially expiring titles to play it safe.

      Delete
    11. I'm not having this problem. My Vizio TV Netflix app is still showing two weeks notice, and MyList on the iPad app and the Mac Firefox browser view of the Netflix website both show one week notice. I just posted a comment on the New Format for MyList page that offers a suggestion for those you experiencing problems, however.

I'm still hoping the contracts will be renewed for many of these May 31 expirations. There's too many on my list for me to get to them all.

      Delete
    12. when you go through the web everything is taken off. Even movies expiring a couple days from now are no longer showing on the dvd side. It doesn't even show the extra button to let you know it is dvd and streaming. Forget invading other countries someone needs to invade Netflix and force the morons that keep ruining it out.

      Delete
    13. Actually must have just been a couple of titles they got rid of earlier than they said they were, I see the streaming button on others. Still no expiration dates. They changed the new release screen too. Now it no longer tells you Sunday the movies that are releasing that week. They now tell you a week later what was released last week. Many swear words Netflix. I have Amazon since I want free shipping so maybe it is time to just get rid of netflix. I can steal any of the few shows I want to see from them so why have a subscription if they are going to keep jerking me around.

      Delete
    14. I do see an expiration date on the Instant streaming page, under Details using the right arrow. But I think it's limited to a week in advance.

It's frustrating that an international company like Netflix can't trust its customers to be educated on the expiration dates and make informed decisions from there. It's just the arrogance that bothers me, the we know better than you so we'll hide everything and make it harder on the customers. We're the ones who pay the subscription fees that allow you to go around the world. Treat us well or we'll find homes elsewhere,

For what it's worth, still able to find upcoming films on the DVD side like The Pursuit of Happyness and Rock the Kasbah.

    15. This comment is from Nica. Nica, it looks like your comment got "vaporized" - I found it in my email.

Nica has left a new comment on your post "Current Expiring Titles" on May 13, 2016 at 3:46 PM:

Oh, lovely. That means they very purposely removed the expiration dates from the DVD side. This is so aggravating. I really do not enjoy any of the changes they have been making lately, but I don't feel there is an alternative worth my money. Hulu and Prime, in my opinion, do not have nearly the amount of titles I want to watch compared to Netflix streaming and DVD combined.

Here is what I have discovered as the "rules" (that are obviously subject to Netflix's whims) for expiration dates: TV shows are listed 30 days in advance on their site and my iPhone app. Movies are listed one week in advance on their site and the iPhone app. Every title gets a 14-day warning on the xBox 360 app, but TV shows will have a little notice when you start to play them that they are expiring. This is clearly subject to Netflix's whims as they try to hide things, which is stupid, in my opinion. The five-year term of the Miramax deal was very clearly stated in the articles that are still searchable thanks to the magic of the internet. They're just relying on their customers being too lazy to remember and/or research these things. Then when they get called out on it, they don't want bad press and backlash like when the Epix deal expired and when they lost Doctor Who, so they decide to hide it by taking away the notices on the DVD side.

    16. As it looks like we will no longer be able to check expiration dates on the Netflix DVD site, I have started a list of devices/apps that offer more lead time than 7 days for expiring movies/other single shows. The list is on the FAQ/Resource page (there's a page tab beneath the blog title banner).

Nica and CanandaiguaNY, I have started the list with the 2 devices you mention in your comments that have 14 days lead time. I hope it was alright to borrow from you.

For everyone: If you have access to expiring titles sooner than the 7 days Netflix gives on the streaming site, please send details in a comment: Specific name of your source, e.g., "Vizio TV Netflix app," and exact amount of lead time, e.g., "14 days." Comments can go here or on the FAQ/Resource page. Thank you.

    17. This is further evidence that netfilx does not care about us at all and has their own agenda with 0 consideration for its customers. An hour after letting customer service know we can see stream end dates the code is changed and it is gone. Months after many people complaining the streaming list of movies in queue doesn't work and it still only works about 50 or 60 % of the time for me.

  14. Well, I totally blew the update for yesterday! I'm afraid all the changes took so much longer than I anticipated (doesn't everything, always?). But I think things are much calmer now. All the 5/31 movies are on their own page, with hopefully helpful formatting and info.

Since I didn't update yesterday, the new titles (in my previous comment) are showing as new today. So far there aren't any more new ones.

Thanks to all of you for hanging in there with me.

    1. Thank you SO much, Carol! I'm guessing that a day with a handful of new titles might take half an hour or so to update, which could be a pleasant way to start the day most of the time. These months when Netflix drops several dozen from one or more distributors all at once must eat up a chunk of your life for a week or two, at the same time as you'd like to be watching them. You definitely have my gratitude and my sympathy. It seems like a couple of folks here have worked out ways to share some of the load. Are there ways that more of us could help?

    2. It's so lovely of you to ask, Linklisa. (And, btw, your estimation of time required is right on - for both normal days and the recent onslaught. But, challenge is good for us, right?) Larry G. has been shouldering at least half the burden, modifying and creating technical tools that make it possible for me to keep so much info organized.

So many of you have contributed in so many ways - titles, reviews, articles, knowledge/experience, and more - I feel like we're all doing a pretty good job of supporting each other.

I think we're through the initial shock of the Miramax departure, and my big concern now is the loss of the DVD site expiration dates. I know those with rokus, xboxes, wiis, vizios, and other devices that give extra notice for expiring dates will let us know everything they can about the status of the May 31 titles, as soon as they can access it.

Other than that, I can't think of anything offhand, but it's good to know that if something comes up, you are willing to pitch in what you can. Thank you, Linklisa. You, and the many others that made David's blog a comfortable, informative, and helpful place to be, are the reason I was willing to take on this project in the first place. Your continued support is the reason I'm still here.

  15. Well, here's your answer regarding May 31 and a potential renewal with Miramax for those titles. In short, it's a big NO.

DEADLINE: As you continue to evolve, how important is re-upping your content deals with the likes of Miramax and TWC? The old films versus the original films you’ll make.
SARANDOS: We said in the US, which is a meaningful part of our business, we have output deals. The Disney deal starts this year and the Weinstein deal starts the end of the year, and those will be our output deals. In the last round of renewals, we weren’t even bidders, and we won’t be bidders in future single-territory output deals. What I’m really excited about is our original films that we’re producing. The ability to buy the pay-TV window worldwide like we did with The Big Short, so that movie will be available with a slightly accelerated window, but available the same time around the world. I think that we can be involved in business that will accelerate the windows and line up geographies over time to complement the original features as they roll out, and also beyond those we’re also doing the festival pick ups and preemptive buys; pre-festival, when movies are in the development stage.

    2. That's the first mention of the Mirimax non-renewal anywhere on the internet but here, I just Googled it again. And if I'm understanding it correctly, it's leaving the door open for a renewal down the road if it's worldwide, not just for the U.S. Also, as I said in a comment on the May 31 page, I doubt those Mirimax titles we thought were renewed really are.

      Delete
    3. BTW they mention The Weinstein Company in the same breath as Mirimax, I suppose that means that deal will be expiring too, probably soon.

      Delete
    4. Miramax used to be run by the Weinstein brothers as a Disney subsidiary but now is an independent studio with no connection to the Weinsteins. The Netflix deal is with The Weinstein Company for films coming out after 2016. TWC is owned by the Weinsteins and its wholly owned subsidiary, Dimension Films, which holds the rights to films it distributed as a subsidiary of TWC but not as a subsidiary of Miramax. Further confusing things is that Netflix has had a deal to release Radius-TWC films. TWC has now shut down Radius. However some Radius films and some TWC films from 2015 have recently shown up as Amazon Prime exclusives. TWC had a deal with Showtime to show films released by TWC before 2016 on cable. Most of these films have shown up on Netflix within 30 to 60 days after they appear on Showtime. My rule of thumb is that any TWC movie on Showtime will eventually appear on Netflix. I can't account for the "outliers" on Amazon Prime which also don't show up on Showtime. Anything released by TWC or Dimension in 2016 should show up on Netflix only.

Incidentally, I think Netflix is losing the opportunity to show some great indie films by not entering into output contracts with indie studios. Amazon now has exclusive deals with A24, Broad Green Pictures and other indie studios where content shows up between 3 and 6 months after theatrical releases. I would take any of their films over Adam Sandler movies or Special Correspondents, all of which Netflix pays a premium for and all of which are savaged by critics.

      Delete
    5. Sarandos didn't make any mention of the output deals Netflix has in Canada with Disney, Paramount and other major studios. Also, to my knowledge, they never had an output deal with Miramax--they were just licensing titles from their catalogue.

  16. Amazon Prime is showing the X-Files and various PBS content, including the Ken Burns documentaries, expiring on June 14. (The PBS content was also supposed to have expired last June but was renewed before its expiration date.). Any rumblings on whether this content will be disappearing from Netflix next month?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I got one episode left of the X-Files but I will be peeved but not surprised if Netflix takes it off without adding the latest newest season.

To think I use to like the word "original" until Netflix now I can't stand that word.

      Delete
    2. Regarding PBS content: The series (quite a few of them streaming now) have not shown up on uNoGS yet, so they should be safe until 6/16, at least. I suspect we'll get the monthly press release of titles leaving in June within the next week, so we should get more insight, then. (Can't wait to see how many of the Miramax titles NF puts in the press release - I'll bet nowhere near all of them.)

  17. I'm so glad I found this site! I thought I was losing my mind when the expiration dates disappeared from my DVD searches.

Can someone explain how to see the expiration dates on the iPhone app? I just checked mine and I don't see expiration dates there.

    1. Hi Anonymous, I'm glad you found us, too. I don't have an iPhone, but from what others have said, you only get 7 days notice of expiring movies on them. Have you checked one of the movies expiring soon, like Black Hawk Down?

      Delete
    2. Honestly at this point, you can just look at your full My List on the Netflix site and see the same info anyone can see on their Netflix iPhone app. The Boondocks is the only expiration on my list right now even though I know 20+ titles in my list will be expiring at the end of the month!

    3. This comment below is from Anonymous. Anonymous, I'm sorry this happened, but we've had some problems with comments disappearing after you leave them. I'm working on this problem, but have gotten side-tracked by the May 31 issue. All comments are sent to my email, so I catch them there, but not always right away.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Current Expiring Titles" on May 18, 2016 at 12:09 PM:

Ah, ok. I thought someone said the iPhone gave you more time. I can see 7 days out on my computer too. I just tried Black Hawk Down on my iPhone and I can see the expiration date there too. Odd that it doesn't show up on the Kindle app though.

Seven days is just not enough time. Until lately, I had a weekly routine of checking every movie in my streaming queue on the DVD title pages and had pretty good success at figuring out what was expiring in the next 28 days. I checked on May 5 and found about 25 titles expiring, but when I checked again on the 13th none of them had an expiration date. So I checked one I knew to be expiring on May 15th and it didn't list an expiration date but when I added it to my queue it did. And then it really did expire. I've tried posting comments/questions about it on Netflix's FaceBook page, but of course they ignore it and don't even post my comment. So I've just been frantically watching movies - a Streamageddon - because I don't trust Netflix to not just remove them when time is up. I know that's happened to me before. At least when a movie expires on Amazon it stays in your queue, even though it's not free to watch it anymore.

I thought it was just me, and even though I'm not happy about the situation, I'm happy I'm not alone in my consternation! I get kind of geeky about my queue. I organized it by genre, then alphabetical order. Then they took the genres off, and now you can't just drag and drop where you want. I hate the thumbnails.

Anyway, now I'm just ranting. I checked your May 31 page and all 25 of mine were on there. I'm just going to stay tuned here.

      Thanks for your help!

  18. Watch out about those four films. They can still expire even though they don't have a date. Then it is a phantom item in your list you can never remove. This is why for months I now have my List empty and just search to watch something new or go into continue watching.

  19. PunkinheadDelux, could you tell us the model of your smart TV? If it's a Vizio, it's already on the FAQ/Resources page, but if it's a different brand, it's a new one to add. Thanks.

    1. Thanks, CanandaiguaNY. Sony smart TVs were just added to the list, too.

Also, many people have mentioned Rokus, in the past. There are quite a few choices in the Roku line-up. Does anyone know if all Roku products include the 2-week notice feature for titles about to expire? (Please forgive my gaping chasm of technology ignorance.)

  20. Carol, you are truly amazing! I want to thank you and all of the many contributers who keep us so well informed. I just finished checking EVERY title on your May 31 list of movies set to expire as well as those no longer expiring and everything appears to be exactly as you have them listed (at least as of tonight). Tomorrow I will try to see what may appear through random scrolling on my Vizio TV Netflix app.

This is wonderful and helps me so much with my planning my watching for the month.

  22. Exstreamist has an article today saying more than 600 titles are expiring June 1. We only have about 400 so far. Yikes! They don't give a list, but the Netflix press release should be out soon. Wednesday, everyone will be able to see "availability until June 1" on the Netflix site movie pages.

    2. He links to your May 31 page! Good he's giving you some credit for being first with the news. The hyperlink is "over 600 movies," but as you say you only have 400 listed, so maybe he just miscounted?

      Delete
    3. Omigosh - I didn't realize he was getting his info from us - cool! Maybe he's getting the 600 from what was in the Miramax deal to begin with, but as we know, not everything is leaving. What confused me in the article was that he said all the movies "show that they’re expiring on their Netflix profiles." Uh, not until Wednesday, dude.

  23. No surprise that Netflix rather waste there money on the unfunny old hack Sander or that idiot Pee Wee then renew movies. I say by 2020 Netflix will rename there company name "Netflix Originals" as 90% will just be originals at a great price of $15 a month. Of course I won't be a subscriber no more.

We can only hope maybe Amazon or Hulu will pick up the Miramax deal like they did with Epix.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So this is the closest Netflix has come to announcing the end of the Mirimax deal, Ted Sarandos saying in a new blog post "a batch of non-exclusive titles are leaving."

    https://media.netflix.com/en/company-blog/get-ready-for-summer-on-netflix-us

That's some "batch." It's interesting that they're not being more straightforward and transparent about this, as they were with the end of the Starz and Epix deals.

The FlixPlus links to RT sometime go directly to the movie page, and other times gives you a search results page. My working theory is that if the movie title is unique, it goes directly, e.g. The Pallbearer. On the other hand, Nanking, which is picked up in multiple titles, goes to a search results page? Curious if anyone has any ideas why...

Netflix ‘Refreshes’ Deal With Miramax For Library Titles

    by Anita Busch

    June 1, 2016 12:07pm

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has renewed its deal with Miramax to keep some of its 700-plus title library within their streaming service. Netflix said that some titles are staying put and others falling out but they would not release the number of titles they are keeping. Although Netflix’s corporate strategy is heavily on developing original content, the library made up roughly 10% of the streaming service’s total content right now. No terms of the deal have been disclosed, but the deal is surprising given that Netflix chief Ted Sarandos underscored to Deadline earlier this month about the importance of original content. He noted, “What I’m trying to do is take the benefits and the beautiful byproduct of the internet, which is all about consumer choice, and apply it to movies where no one else has.” In talking about content deals, he only included Disney and The Weinstein Co.

The Miramax library pact with Netflix was set to expire yesterday, May 31. The Miramax library “refresh” comes only months before the streaming service’s deal with Disney kicks in and as it’s multi-year pact with The Weinstein Company gets underway. This September, Netflix will have the exclusive rights for streaming/pay TV of the latest live-action and animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm for all films released this year. That means The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia and Alice Through the Looking Glass as well as Finding Dory, Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The deal also includes direct-to-video titles and all will be made available for Netflix members to watch instantly in the pay TV window on multiple platforms, including television, tablets, computers and mobile phones.

In addition, the two giants pacted on a multi-year catalog deal for Disney classics like Dumbo, Pocahontas and Alice in Wonderland.

The Weinstein Co. deal includes such titles as Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, Hateful Eight and Philomena to name a few.

With the Miramax library, Netflix keeps hold of such titles as Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, No Country for Old Men and The English Patient as well as Life is Beautiful, Amelie, The Crying Game, Strictly Ballroom, My Left Foot and Cinema Paradiso (again, to name only a few).

Miramax has gone through various incarnations in ownership but most recently was bought by Qatar-based media and entertainment company beIN Media Group. The company was originally launched in 1979 by Bob and Harvey Weinstein which now helm The Weinstein Company.

This month, Netflix will release Jurassic Park: The Lost World, this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight; in July it drops The Big Short and in August it will premiere another critical favorite: The Little Prince along with The Fast & The Furious, The Wedding Planner and St. Vincent.

In response to inquiries from Deadline, Netflix said, “We refreshed our agreement with Miramax … summer is a time when we refresh a large part of our film catalogue and this year is no exception.”

    1. This is nothing new.

Quote: Netflix said that some titles are staying put and others falling out but they would not release the number of titles they are keeping.

Readers of this blog know the numbers.
Carol has found 33 titles remaining and 501 titles are gone.

The Deadline reporter did not even bother to check the veracity of their own reporting.

No Country for Old Men is unavailable to stream. DVD only.
Life is Beautiful is unavailable to stream. DVD only.
The Crying Game is unavailable entirely on Netflix.
Strictly Ballroom is unavailable to stream. DVD only.
My Left Foot is unavailable to stream. DVD only.

Sorry, but this is no news.

Carol, thanks for all your efforts. Get a good rest. You deserve it.

    2. Anita Busch is a very well-respected, experienced reporter. I don't think she pulled those titles out of a hat. If they aren't available to stream right now, it may be because the renewal deal just happened and they haven't been put back on yet. Yes we already knew 28 Mirimax titles were renewed, but I THINK this goes beyond that. If there were still over 500 Mirimax titles being removed, I doubt she would have published this article.

    3. Sorry I should have said over 400 Mirimax titles. 500 was the total of all expiring titles.

    4. The suspicious phrase here is "Netflix said that some titles are staying put and others falling out but they would not release the number of titles they are keeping." That very strongly implies that whatever Miramax titles were renewed are the ones that didn't expire yesterday, which (as far as we can tell) amount to a whopping 33 movies. Netflix's refusal to give even a vague ballpark figure for how many movies are part of the new deal gives me little confidence we will see an imminent mass renewal.

    5. I'll also add that No Country for Old Men is still part of the Starz catalog (and left Netflix four years ago as part of that catalog) and would not be available to Netflix as part of any renewal of the Miramax deal.

  55. And you can add Decider to that list of those reporting a Miramax renewal. It's possible that we may be getting more of those titles back than those we found renewed. But I imagine that it's not an overnight process.

    1. That Decider post is just repeating and linking to the Deadline article, as is one other site. Busch remains the one source for this for now.

    2. Deadline's broken a number of stories when it comes to new series/movies heading to Netflix (see the upcoming Fundamentals of Caring to think of one example) so I believe I can trust them when it comes with renewing contracts with a film studio.

    3. Talk about fuzzy reporting. The Miramax deal has been renewed, but people seem to be all over the place in stating "all" of the content will stay at Netflix, "some" of the content will stay, and "the content will contain old and new titles". Since Miramax doesn't make movies any more but is just a catalogue of movies owned by a private investor, the last statement is particularly bizarre unless there are some movies not previously licensed to Netflix that will be licensed in this "renewal", which was apparently signed on May 31 but apparently takes effect sometime in the (unspecified) future. This is beginning to sound like the Disney deal which "took effect" on January 1 except that Netflix has to wait nine months or more to stream the new Disney content. Are the lunatics running the asylum?

  56. June seems to be the time of the year when PBS content expires or renews. There is a lot of PBS content, including the Ken Burns documentaries expiring on Netflix on 6/30, which is also set to expire on Amazon Prime in mid-June. Some of the CBS content scheduled to expire on 6/30 (Numbers, Medium, Flashpoint) stream on Amazon Prime. I am surprised that Doc Martin is expiring since I think it's fairly popular and there is at least one season (maybe two) that haven't streamed yet on Netflix. Acorn TV (at $4.95/mo.) has all seasons of Doc Martin..
