Welcome to the Discussions & Ideas page for October 2016!

This page is an open forum and catchall for discussing anything about Netflix, this blog, and/or other related topics. Feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, share information, offer opinions, even rant if something is bugging you.

The body of this page will be used to keep everyone updated when there is blog news, and to ask for feedback about improvements/changes/additions, etc. Of course, your participation is always optional and voluntary.

When a particular topic generates a lot of discussion, it will be spun off to its own specific Discussion page. Links to prior discussions are in the sidebar, either under Ongoing Discussions or Other Archives.

Looking Back. . . And Forward
As you've seen on the Home page, we have been in the expirations-on-Netflix business for a whole year. It has been my pleasure to work with all of you over the last 12 months. You are always supportive, sometimes amazing, and an excellent example of what an online community should be - a helpful resource for everyone in it, unfailingly respectful (even when not in agreement), and willing to go the extra mile when needed. I think our best moment came in May, when we learned of the Miramax mass exodus. Together, we produced a comprehensive list that received thousands of hits, in spite of Netflix shutting down the DVD-side expiration notices, and doing their best to minimize the whole thing. They did not know who they were dealing with. ; - )

The ultimate upshot of losing those notices, though, is that it took a bit of wind out of our sails. Whereas we used to offer readers almost a month's notice for all titles, we're now down to two weeks - only a week more than Netflix gives on the streaming site. It's also a lot harder to ferret out expiring movies, although we've been doing pretty well. I have to admit to wondering if it's worth the trouble for only an extra week, but then I find myself checking the list to plan my viewing, and realize how glad I am to have it.

Other aspects of the site are still going strong, too. The "We Recommend" pages offer a lot of help to answer the question, "is there anything worth watching on Netflix?" And the "Discussion" pages are a fountain of information about all things Netflix, as well as a place where we can seek help with problems, and commiserate about them. All of this gives me that warm fuzzy feeling necessary to want to keep it all going.

Between all the updating and upkeep, the blog does take a fair amount of time. Maintaining all the pages is a challenge, but I don't want to give any of them up. I've been thinking of various ways to give myself more time. One possibility is to add new titles to the master list only four or five times a week, instead of every day. I would still do a daily formatting update so everything would be correctly formatted - that takes less than fifteen minutes. Adding titles involves more work. The same goes for the "We Recommend - Expiring Titles" page. I'm also feeling the need for a designated day or two off - after doing the quickie update, I would be unavailable for the rest of the day, so any comments needing attention would have to wait until the next day.

I'll let you know when I decide about all of this, so you'll know exactly what to expect; just wanted to give you a little advance notice.

My goal: A blog that looks polished and feels complete (not giving up on this!), and that offers helpful content for all, without detracting from the sacred mission of giving followers as much lead time as possible to watch expiring titles.

Thanks to the many contributors who share their time, knowledge and expertise to keep the blog interesting, informative, and fresh in a variety of ways. It is truly a collaborative effort, and I'm honored to be part of it.

  1. I guess this is the best spot for this. But as suspected, Best of Enemies is returning to Netflix Instant on October 11. Still don't know why they felt the need to take it out in the first place.

    1. Thanks for this good news, Brian. Could Netflix taking it off have something to do with PBS wanting to be the exclusive place for it when they broadcast it on Independent Lens Monday night? Maybe that's just a coincidence. I don't understand the gone-for-a-few-weeks-then-back thing either. Lapse in contract? I find this dynamic confusing and unsettling, but I'm just a customer, so I don't really know what I want.

      Delete
    2. Based on its timing, I think it had to do with exclusivity. PBS wanted to be able to have Best of Enemies as part of Independent Lens and part of that is the film would appear on its website for about a month or so. There was probably a window of about a week or so where it had to be exclusive to PBS. Note that Best of Enemies returns on the following Tuesday.

The quick turnaround wouldn't be unprecedented. Netflix got T-Rex (boxing documentary on Claressa Shields) about a week after it aired on Lens. But you're right, it's a bit strange why they'd choose to yank Enemies after it had been streaming just fine for a while now. If I had to guess, I'd presume it's because of TV ratings. Why would you watch a documentary on PBS when it's on Netflix on demand?

      Delete
    3. And on a related note, maybe it is just for certain titles. The turnaround between Hooligan Sparrow appearing on PBS as part of the POV series and showing up on Instant Streaming was maybe a day.

  2. Carol, thanks for doing such a great job. It's hard to believe it's been an entire year since you started the blog. You and everyone else do such a great job keeping the list updated that I rarely find anything to contribute:)

I'm sure everyone will understand if you need to take some time for yourself. You have been incredibly generous to spend so much time for so long keeping this blog up and so well maintained.

Kudos to Carol and happy anniversary to the blog.:)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be happy to give you a job reference to endorse your skills of organization, dedication, clear communication, skilled analysis and synthesis of differing viewpoints, flexibility, inventiveness, and hospitality. 3. Chuck and Shameless both ending on 10/31? The purge of quality licensed content continues. In the meantime we seem to be getting a lot of "old" (2005-2010) BBC documentaries as well as old comedy series from Scotland. Is this what we have to look forward to in the future?

The first three seasons of Shameless (UK) are streaming on Amazon Prime. Is Chuck or Shameless streaming on Hulu or any other (legal) platform?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All 139 episodes of Shameless are on Hulu - don't know if there's any plan for them to expire. Not so lucky with Chuck - not currently on Hulu. The American version of Shameless is also on Hulu, but you have to get the Showtime add-on for that one.

      Delete
    2. Chuck is on Amazon Prime, if you're willing to pay a buck per episode.

      Delete
    3. More news on Chuck. Namely its star Zachary Levi and fans are undergoing a campaign on Twitter to save Chuck from being pulled. We'll see if it works, fingers crossed.

      Delete
    4. The money that otherwise would have gone to keep Chuck, Shameless and about another dozen series i($40 million) is instead going to pay for two Chris Rock stand-up comedy routines. Much as I like Chris, $40million for two hours of laughs is not really why I am paying $9.99/mo.for Netflix.

    5. Wellesley I agree and $40 for some stupid comedian standing in front of a stage. Really Netflix wasting money on that.

  4. Link Changes

    1. I have moved the links to discussions for "Refreshment Stand" and "Subscription Price Change" to the newly titled "Discussions Archive" section in the sidebar (used to be "Other Archives"). I have also moved the link to the Amazon Prime Message (from LarryG) to that location. All of these discussions seem to have run their course and are not likely to be revived.

    2. I have removed the links to reviews/Oscar info for expired titles because a) I've fallen pitifully behind in keeping these up to date and organized, and b) not sure what good they are.

I have also fallen behind in adding prior reviews/Oscar info for returned titles to the New and Existing page (new comments, too, I'm afraid, but at least they're there for people to see). I'm rethinking this page and the returning titles issue, but in the meantime, the prior reviews and Oscar info will be offline.

Pox Voldius, when you note that Oscar winners have returned, you mention if the info is in the archive. Do you have your own notes about this, or do you refer to the lists that are here? Would it be helpful to have a list of all archived titles that have Oscar info so you know which ones we already have, and therefore don't have to list the info out again? That would be easier for me to put up (and keep updated) than all the actual archived Oscar info.

    3. I have put links to the Add Titles thread and the current Discussions & Ideas page in the footer of the blog (where the Amazon Prime Message link used to be).

  5. Carol,
Re: less frequent updating & new comments procedure.
I often check for new expiring titles 2 or 3 times per day, so do not use the main listings except to check if expiring titles I have found are already there. So, I have no problem with you updating less frequently.
As my reviews are quite terse, they are fairly quick to scan through, assuming anyone even uses them. So again less frequent updating of these is not a problem. If you want to abandon the reviews page, it would free up some of my daily time as well. I submit them because you asked for more reviews and to show my appreciation for this blog. I have probably seen hundreds of movies that would otherwise have expired unnoticed if not for your, and previously David's, blog.

As far as splitting the comments, I was a little confused the first time, but seems fairly easy. I like to read thru the comments anyway, so splitting them does make it slightly more difficult, but whatever makes it easier for you is fine with me.
Thanks again for all you do!

    1. Thanks Eric, I appreciate this feedback.

As far as abandoning the reviews page, I definitely don't want to do that - it's our most popular page after the main page, and I'm sure your reviews have more than a little to do with that. I love having them, and really appreciate your dedication, but freeing up some of your daily time would make me happy, too. You have already done more than your share of contributing to this blog.

Perhaps it would work for you to send fewer reviews, and/or less frequently. The ones that help me personally the most are the 3.0 stars or higher, and the less than 2.0 stars. Also, regardless of stars, I really appreciate reviews with comments such as, "good fight scenes," or "started well, then just meandered," - things that tell me what made the film stand out (good or bad), or what your experience was while watching. Of course, you're free to send whatever reviews you choose, or no reviews if that's what works best for you. You have more than won my gratitude already. :-)

Different anonymous here, just wanted to give input on the new comment title rule. Sorry if this is the wrong place.

First you run into problems like we've seen just here. Not everyone is a regular here and who knows how many new people show up each month. Second, I'll usually just scroll to the bottom of the page, then work my way up for anything new. This makes it less convenient. People can track what's new to the list by the titles highlighted in red anyway, right? Just my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Anonymous, I'm sorry the new (trial) system is less convenient for you. Eric made the same comment (above). I'm hoping that if we honestly give it a fair try for a month, it might get easier.

One of the hard things about making this blog as useful as possible to everyone is that everyone is different. We access the blog on different devices, we have different methods for getting the info we want (e.g., some prefer to get titles exclusively from Comments, and don't often look at the "master list"), and we each have our own preferences for how we use our devices (e.g.,some prefer to scroll, others hit ctrl+home or ctrl+end). I love the individuality, but making everybody happy is a challenge.

As far as familiarizing people with the new system, I don't think that's a big problem. Brand new people should be reading the submission guidelines before sending titles, and I plan to put notes on that page explaining what we do. I expect there will be a learning curve, but it's no big deal to relocate a title comment, and point the contributor to an explanation of our methods.

I hope lots of people leave comments here saying how they feel about the new system, and why. That way I can get a better view of what the majority prefer, and what the challenges are for both the old and the new way. Towards the end of October, I'll make a decision about whether to stay with the Add Titles thread, or go back to the conventional method.

      Delete
    2. This new system is terrible. I am a regular here and even I did not know about this. What is the point since the main page has all the expired list anyway. You don' even need to go to the comments to even see the list.

      Delete

    3. Thank you for this feedback, Tony. I understand your points.

      > I did a poor job of making sure everyone knew about this change - I had planned to do better, but ran out of time. I will be putting a message on the main page within a couple of days to bring everyone current about this topic.

      > Different people have various ways they use this site. I'm sure a lot of readers do look only at the main list. Some, however, like to check in during the day to see what expiring titles others have contributed in the comments section. These wouldn't be on the main list yet.

      > Some others don't want to scan through the main list every day looking for the latest additions - they just want to get the most recent titles submitted, and the comments are the easiest way to do that, especially if those titles are all in one place.

For those of you who use the main list for title information, and who don't regularly contribute additional expiring titles, nothing has changed, really, so I'm wondering why you think the new system is "terrible." Please give this some thought, and read my message when I put it at the top of the main page (probably on Tuesday, Oct. 18, but possibly on Wednesday if I get too busy). Then let me know if you still feel the same.

I really appreciate you writing, Tony. I would love to find a way to make everyone happy, and the best chance for that is listening to a variety of voices, and taking each individual's concerns seriously. Thanks for sharing yours.

    4. I come here daily first looking and what is expiring and then reading the comments. Too have to go to two places to read comments does not really make sense. Since anytime someone in the main comment thread posts an expiring show you they show up in the main page anyway.

Anyway thanks for moderating all the comments otherwise. I block them on other sites because they are so vile.

  7. Add Titles Comment Thread

Sorry to go on about this - but I actually put up a page explaining why I thought this idea might work for us. There's a link to it in the sidebar under Ongoing Discussions. That would probably be the best place to put all comments about this topic.

Are the DVD centers still open on Saturdays? I used to get new DVDs within 3 days after mailing back the old ones, but now it seems if I mail it on a Friday, they don't receive it until Monday, when they used to send out the new one on Saturday. I don't know if the mail is slower now or just the Operations Center.

    1. when i called and asked them about this in june 2014, they claimed it was either close on saturdays or raise prices. it's hard to feel sorry for this company, but i recognize it is above all a business. for good measure, i asked the representative if there was any announcement, and she said flatly no. to my knowledge, this has never been publicly acknowledged anywhere, and when i couldn't find any customers complaining about it back then, over 2 years ago, i knew the tide had turned. that it took you this long to realize speaks to this as well.

      Delete
    2. I had noticed this as well, but didn't call as I expected money was the reason. DVD rental is still profitable for Netflix but original content for streaming is eating up so much money that they need to turn the DVD side into as much of a cash cow as possible to keep up. One doesn't expect notice from Netflix, when they do such things but, about the same time, they did announce that they were closing some DVD centers, reducing the number from 50+ to, I think it's now, 37. Again, cutting costs here to pay for Adam Sandler et al.

      Delete
    3. They do it to themselves. They got rid of the 1 month warning on the dvd side about streaming. I bet there were a lot of streaming people that kept 1 dvd a month just so they could search for expiring titles early. That was free money they just threw away because they are ass hats.

      Delete
    4. At first I just thought it was a fluke. I don't always return movies on Fridays, so I thought maybe the postal service was just running slow sometimes. It took me a while to realize it was a trend. It also seems like they don't turn around as quickly even in the middle of the week. Now I'm thinking they must have closed my nearest facility. It was located only about 2 hours away from me.

      Delete
    5. What are you all talking about? I'm pretty sure I either received an email from Netflix back in 2014 regarding this, or saw something on the internet. If you google it, you'll also find articles from 2014. They weren't trying to hide this; it's just not as many people have the DVD service anymore.

      Delete
    6. I saw the Internet report about closing centers, but if Saturday closing was reported, I missed that. There is some good news on this front however, as the Netflix DVD side's computers are connected to USPS tracking and when they track that a DVD I'm returning is in the system, they mail out my next DVD without waiting for the one returning to actually get to the center. I get an email that my next disk is coming and, a day or two later, an email that the last one was received

The whole system is automated. When I once complained that I kept getting sent the wrong disk, I asked if someone could just get the right disk off the shelf, put it in an envelope, and mail it to me. Nope. No human person is allowed to touch the disks.

      Delete
    7. i noticed it in june 2014 because i used to count how many discs i could get per week (1 or 2 depending on when i mailed it back). i knew if i mailed it friday, they should get it saturday and mail me one for monday. when that stopped happening, i called and rose the issue. at that time, there were no articles. i checked twitter and facebook and saw no discussion of the issue. i even sent an email to a netflix news site called hacking netflix about this unannounced development and another one that affected the wait times listed in the discs queue (what netflix told me may have been an algorithm change) and got no response. that's what i'm talking about. i just googled it and do see that in july 2014 sites started reporting on it, but that was several weeks later. how can you say netflix wasn't trying to hide this? if they were transparent, they would have announced it before or even as they made the change, but they didn't. people had to piece it together. netflix says there are still millions of domestic dvd subscribers to this day, but i guess we weren't owed an explanation.

      Delete
    8. Well, I'm sorry I somehow knew and you didn't. I had been following the possibility of USPS eliminating Saturday delivery for a while and knew getting rid of Saturday delivery was something Netflix was debating anyway, given their diminishing number of DVD subscribers. Maybe I just wasn't surprised when it happened because they had been talking about it for so long. I can't remember things from 2014 related to Netflix as clearly as you, because I was a little busy getting married that year.

      Delete
    9. But, expanding on what I said above, Netflix's USPS tracking doesn't work on Saturday, Sunday or a national holiday like today, when the DVD centers are closed. It seems that someone has to show up at the center to turn the computer on.

      Delete
    10. i remember it clearly because i still have my email to hacking netflix saved in my outbox with all of the details and it was days after my dvd queue overnight gained 75-100 "Very Long Wait" availability times. i, too, remember the USPS publicly considering the possibility of eliminating saturday delivery. i don't remember netflix ever issuing a press release declaring their intention to do the same, not before or after they did it. updating their terms of service is not the same, especially without directing anyone's attention to it.

as far as USPS tracking, netflix is not going to send an email on saturday saying they got the disc mailed on friday (or whenever). from what i understand, it's accurate that their processing centers are completely shut down on the weekend. the silver lining is that because your disc has been sitting over there since saturday, it may get processed earlier than those shipped saturday and delivered monday, especially if USPS already scanned the return.

Hey, folks, the Free 45-Day HULU Trial of their Limited Commercials Plan is STILL available for Free at Groupon.com today. Check it out at:

    https://www.groupon.com/deals/hulu

Apparently, the offer has been so successful with over 100,000 bought, they have extended the limited-time offer, which I first reported in my Sept 24 comment on the September Expiring Titles webpage.

I am pleased to report that the $7.99/month Limited Commercials Plan does NOT show commercials when viewing Movies. I am enjoying watching the classic foreign movies of the Criterion Collection by directors like Jean Renoir, Max Ophuls, Francois Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Luis Bunuel, Akira Kurosawa, and on and on.

Any ideas what's going on? It's a documentary called Under the Sun (2016). I don't see it on uNoGS's list of new movies either.

    1. i can't speak to the rest of what you said, but were you expecting a check mark to add it to My List? netflix removed the ability to add a title to My List from the discs queue last year. it used to be you could hover the mouse over "play" and then select to add it instead, but now you can only play, unless you have a feature i don't (and would envy, as i've asked on multiple occasions to have it restored). i've never seen a check mark from there, only on the streaming half of the site, but maybe that's what you were referring to.

      Delete
    2. Usually if I see a 'Play' button on my DVD list, I just go to the Streaming side and search for it, then add it to my queue from there. In the past, IIRC, it would start playing if you did that before. Today I noticed that if you click play directly from the DVD list now, it doesn't immediately start playing, it goes to the description page as if it were on the streaming side. That feature might be new because I don't recall having that ability before. If I search for it from the DVD side, it shows a 'Q' button and a 'Play' button, but if I click 'Play' it gives me an error. When I go to the streaming side and try to search for it, it's not there.

    3. My last post is worded poorly but I don't see a way to edit it. What I meant was if you clicked on 'Play' directly from the DVD list it would immediately start playing.

    4. i see what you mean. i never actually click play from my dvd queue, but i just pressed the button, expecting it to start playing, and it brought me to the info page on the streaming site instead. netflix really doesn't care...

    5. I haven't seen a play button on my DVD queue (502 titles + 196 saved) in over a year but I have the same problem going from Carol's master list or a Netflix recommendation to add a title to MyList. If the title immediately starts playing, I click on "stop" and there's usually a +MyList button there or a click away. This is all part of Netflix's move to completely separate the DVD and streaming side. I expect fairly soon the DVD operation will be sold to raise more money for original streaming content--1,000 hours of new originals promised for 2017.

  17. There is already significant Oscar buzz for Manchester-by-the-Sea, which is co-produced by Amazon Studios and is currently in theaters before streaming on Amazon, probably in December. Quite a contrast with Netflix, which may make a splash in both long-form and short documentaries (with The 13th and The White Helmets, respectively) but which has no credible candidates for any other Oscar nominations because of the generally poor quality of its films [Is there no one at Netflix who has an eye for great film-making or is the decision made by algorithm?], compounded by its determination to release films theatrically and on Netflix at the same time, a decision which is anathema to most good film makers working today. That's why Birth of a Nation, probably Netflix's best chance for an Oscar, went to Fox Searchlight instead of Netflix, which bid about $1 million more for the movie. (Ironically, Birth of a Nation has bombed at the box office; it probably would have had a wider audience if it had been sold to Netflix.)

  20. Thank you for removing this useless and confusing Discussion section. Reminds me of a gaming forum when they ended up breaking up in separate sites certain games and if anyone even mentioned one word of the game the annoying mods would lock the post and tell them to go to the other forum where you had to register and start basically all over. Fast forward to today I stopped using them years ago after that.
