Amazon Prime Subscribers: Important Message

Friday, September 2, 2016
Following is a time-sensitive message from Larry G for everyone who subscribes to Amazon Prime.

Hey, Wellesley72, will g, Jordan, and others. It appears that jaydro has abandoned the Amazon Prime Video expiration website.

Here's my suggestion for one certain way to find Prime expiring titles for Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. This technique is time-sensitive, and will only work if begun today, Friday, Sept 2, when Amazon Prime begins posting the end-of-month expiration notices.

Amazon Prime Video will begin to post the end-of-month Orange Expiration Date Notices in the Pop-Up Info Windows of movies in Your Watchlist on their usual 28-day advance notice schedule in the next two days [Sept. 2 and 3]. The problem is that, while HALF of the titles will expire on Sept 30 and HALF of the titles will expire on Oct 1, ALL of the Orange Expiration Date Notices will say, "Leaving Prime on Sep 30, 2016." So, to be safe, we usually have to say that the day before is the Last Day to Watch, which will be Sept 29 this month. But the Oct 1 expiring movies will have an Extra Day to Watch.

Please see the Important Update from Larry in the Comments before beginning this procedure.

Now, here's my tip: Go through your entire Your Watchlist today, Friday, Sept 2nd, searching for all titles with the Orange "Leaving Prime on Sep 30, 2016" Notice. These titles will be expiring, in fact, on Sept 30, and so DEFINITELY will have a Sept 29 Last Day to Watch. Use my trick of clicking the Remove link beneath each expiring movie poster, and then clicking the Undo Button to move ALL of these titles to the top of page 1 of Your Watchlist.

Any and all other Sep 30 expiring titles you may find elsewhere on the Amazon Prime website on Friday, Sept 2nd, like under the "Customers Who Watched This Item Also Watched" heading, will also DEFINITELY have a Sept 29 Last Day to Watch.

When finished searching on Friday, Sept 2nd, also click the Remove and Undo for one of your previously expired August titles to make it a place marker at the top of page 1.

Then, on Saturday, Sept 3rd, go through your entire Your Watchlist again, searching for all titles with the Orange "Leaving Prime on Sep 30, 2016" Notice in the remaining balance of your list. Any NEW Orange Notices that you find in Your Watchlist on Saturday will be for those titles that are, in fact, expiring on October 1, and so DEFINITELY will have a Sept 30 Last Day to Watch.

You can post these titles with confidence as having a Sept 30 Last Day to Watch. I suggest that you indicate that these titles are "Watchlist checked" when you post them to the new Prime Expiring website in the days ahead.

Be sure when finished searching Your Watchlist on Saturday, Sept 3rd, to also click the Remove and Undo for one of your previously expired August titles to make it another place marker at the top of page 1. Now, you will know with certainty that the titles in your first group of expiring movies have a Last Day to Watch of Sept 29, and the titles in your second group have a Last Day to Watch of Sept 30.

Unfortunately, there is no way to distinguish the new Orange Expiration Notices found on titles in the other areas of the Amazon Prime website on Saturday, Sept 3rd from those added on Friday, Sept 2nd. So, these titles will have to be posted once again as Sept 29 Last Day to Watch, to be safe.

Until Amazon Prime Video comes up with another expiration date method, this 28-day advance notice technique should work to identify SOME of the expiring titles found in Your Watchlist that have an EXTRA DAY to watch at the end of the month.

  1. Thank you Larry, this is very helpful. And thanks for making this page Carol.

I was thinking of contacting David through his personal website to see if he has any idea what happened to Jaydro, but then I thought he almost certainly doesn't and might not want to be bothered with it.

    1. Hey there, Will G (and everyone else). It's great to see all of you--especially Carol and Larry G--working together to make this new page happen. Shana, too, with her standalone Prime site (best of luck with that!). It makes me happy knowing you guys are keeping the flame of expiration notices alive. ;-)

As for jaydro, I do have a vague idea of what happened to him, but unfortunately we're no longer communicating so I can't say for sure. I was sorry to see him pull anchor, though, and I only wish I still had some control over WoPN so I could at least leave a message there for visitors (or even clean up the old lists).

As some of you may have noticed, the current WhatsOnPrimeNow.com link redirects to my personal website--which was not my doing. Apologies to anyone who went there and thought, "WTF, David?!?" If you haven't already figured it out, the old site, minus all of jaydro's posts, can still be reached via the original link, WhatsOnPrimeNow.blogspot.com. Of course, the only reason to go there now is if you want to read over the old posts or comments (sniff). It's very strange having a site up I created that I no longer have any control over. Oh, well--a good lesson in not mixing business with personal, I guess (something The Godfather should have taught me long ago).

Anyway, great to see this blog is still thriving--and growing--and all of you remain invested in passing along such useful info. Keep up the great work!

  2. From Larry G:

    IMPORTANT UPDATE

Do NOT use the "Remove" link BELOW THE MOVIE POSTER in Your Watchlist [and then the Undo Button]. Some of the time this will result in the movie poster Pop-Up Info Window losing the Orange Expiration Date Notice, when the "Remove" link is used to move it to the top of page 1 of Your Watchlist. This is due to the way Amazon has programmed the Your Watchlist webpage. To avoid this problem, do NOT EVER use the "Remove" link [and Undo Button].

INSTEAD you SHOULD click the "Remove from Watchlist" button found IN THE POP-UP INFO WINDOW itself. Then click the "Add to Watchlist" button in the same Pop-Up Info Window to add it back to Your Watchlist. Now when you go back to page 1 of Your Watchlist, you should find that the movie poster Pop-Up Info Window retains the Orange Expiration Date Notice every time.

Sorry, but this is the first month that I have used this technique, and I have just discovered this problem myself.

Here's the procedure to follow to restore a missing Orange Expiration Date Notice to a movie poster Pop-Up Info Window. Click on the movie title in the Pop-Up Info Window to take you to that movie's detail webpage. Scroll down the page to the list of director and cast credits. Click on one of the names there, like the lead actor, actress or director. This will take you to an Amazon search results page showing all of that individual's movies available on Amazon. Look for the same Prime movie poster which is missing the Orange Expiration Date Notice and click on the "Remove from Watchlist" button found there. Then click the "Add to Watchlist" button to add it back to Your Watchlist. Now go back to Your Watchlist, and you should find that the movie poster Pop-Up Info Window has the Orange Expiration Date Notice once again.

  3. Thanks, but I went through my whole list and only have one expiring movie ("The Angriest Man in Brooklyn" on the 6th) and I already knew about that one! I did happen to find one other movie which is expiring on the 30th, "My Man is a Loser" (2014). There's no way I'm doing this tedious check more than twice a month. If Prime wants to pull movies from my Watchlist, I don't care anymore. Even Netflix has a better system!

    1. Hey, will g, are all of your 9/29 movies Watchlist checked and confirmed for Last Day to Watch on 9/29 following my procedure above?

    2. Sorry it took me so long to respond, didn't see this till now. No, sorry, I hadn't followed that procedure. I think I was too late since I didn't go through my list until 9/4.

    3. OK, will. Maybe you can try it next month. All the titles you find on October 3 will definitely expire on October 30. Then whatever additional titles you find in Your Watchlist on October 4 will definitely expire on October 31.

Like Jordan said, I counted over 60 Epix movies Renewed on my Your Watchlist from the over 400 Epix movies expiring last month. I think this means the Amazon Prime Epix contract is still in force, unlike last year's Netflix Epix massacre. While it wasn't nice to see so many titles leave all at once, hopefully we will see more of the Epix titles rotated back into the Prime fold in the months ahead.

Good News! Doctor Who Season 9 is now available on Prime.

    1. Correction: The movie "Midnight ( a.k.a. Call It Murder)" is not the Claudette Colbert Don Ameche 1939 movie "Midnight," but instead the expiring movie is the 1934 drama which includes Humphrey Bogart in the cast. Sorry. I wish it was the other one.

  14. I guess it makes sense to stop posting both here and on Shana's blog, as I've been doing. I'll only post my titles there from now on, as I think Larry is also doing.

I doubt Carol really wants to host the Amazon listings anyway. Carol, can I suggest that perhaps you put a link to Shana's blog somewhere on the home page a bit more noticeable than where it is now?
